Message from the Head of Junior School: November 16th, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

It was so lovely to see our students return after the mid-term break, refreshed and ready to continue learning. With just five weeks to go until the winter break, we are continuing to reinforce the importance of our school norms, as well what it means to be a member of the Havergal Community.

Sincerely,
Kate White

In this message, read about:

Healthy Snacks

With Halloween now behind us, a reminder that in order to reinforce good nutrition and ensure that children maintain a high energy level throughout the day, candy and soft drinks are not permitted in school. A high-energy snack such as fruit, cheese, crackers, yogurt and granola bars may be brought from home to be eaten at recess.

Outdoor Play

With the first snowfall of the season, please ensure that your daughter has all the appropriate outdoor gear, so that she can fully engage in outdoor play at recess.  It is also recommended that she keep an extra pair of socks or tights in her bag, in the event she gets wet while outside.

Havergal’s 125th Anniversary

In 2019 Havergal will mark a significant milestone: our 125th anniversary. We will commemorate the occasion with a special performance to celebrate Havergal’s 125 years of academic excellence.

We invite you to join us on Friday, May 3, 2019 at Roy Thomson Hall at 7 pm for Past, Present, Future, an evening of dance, drama and musical performances.

Tickets for this evening occasion will be released in mid-January 2019 and we will share additional details with you in the coming months. Please note that this performance will replace our spring music concerts for this year and will be mandatory for students in Grades 4 to 12. Similar to Carol Service, students will be seated with their peers and teachers in their Houses. We are excited to embark on this journey together and the year of celebrations to come!

Junior School Build

The foundational work for our new facilities at the Junior School is nearly complete and we will be moving onto the next phase of constructionstructural workvery soon. During this phase of the build, structural steel will at arriving to the work site and assembly for the new buildings will begin.

You may see cranes and steel beams inside the construction site once this work commences. As always, all work will take place inside the construction zone, however, some construction may be visible at times from the Junior School driveway due to the nature of the work.

In planning this project, we have established the necessary construction protocols with student safety at the forefront. Overhead protection has been installed to provide an additional safety barrier near the driveway and walkway, as safety remains our number one priority. To watch this portion of the build take shape, visit our Junior School live feed.

Parking Reminder

While Rosewell Avenue can be very busy during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up periods, we ask that you be mindful of the appropriate parking areas in the neighbourhood. Please take note of the accessible parking spaces in the area and do not use these spaces unless you are an accessible parking permit holder.

These spaces are necessary for citizens with restricted mobility and should not otherwise be used for stopping or parking without a permit.

Parking for Junior School visitors is available at the Cohen Field parking lot, the Upper School parking lot and on nearby side streets in allocated parking zones only. We ask that you please abide by the City of Toronto parking regulations when parking off-site and be a respectful neighbour.

Message from the Head of Junior School: November 2nd, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

It has been another couple of full weeks at Havergal! Between Parent-Teacher Interviews, Halloween, Day 9, Coffee and Conversations, and celebrating Diwali in Prayers this morning, we have very much to be grateful for.  Yesterday, we started the day by talking about the multitude of feelings we can experience during any one day, especially during busy times such as this. We then took a few minutes to engage in a guided meditation to help us to slow our thoughts, concentrate on our breath and reflect on our feelings. These moments are so important, not only because they provide us with a sense of calm, but because they help us to consolidate our learning, as well as acknowledge and enjoy the many blessings in our lives.

Sincerely,
Kate White

Message from the Head of Junior School: October 26, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

It has been such a pleasure to see so many families over the last two days for Parent-Teacher Conferences. These conversations are an opportunity to discuss your daughter’s progress, to see the areas in which she is thriving, and to discuss targeted plans for continued growth. Moreover, they allow us to further strengthen the relationship between home and school.  It is important to remember, however, that while the conferences provide an overview of your daughter’s academic and social-emotional development, ongoing feedback throughout the year is paramount.  Should you ever have questions or concerns, we invite you to contact us and be assured that we will do the same.

As the weather gets colder, please ensure that your daughter brings the proper outdoor clothing (hat, mittens, warm coat, boots etc) for outdoor recesses (morning and afternoon), so that she can enjoy her time outside.

Sincerely,
Kate White

Message from the Head of Junior School: October 19, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

We have been speaking to the students about the difference between happiness and joy over the last several weeks.  Yesterday, Ms. Watt shared with us that Happiness brings us instant pleasure but does not always last very long, like eating a chocolate ice cream cone or getting a book you have had your eye on for a long time.  Joy, on the other hand, warms your heart and is a stronger feeling that stays around you for a much longer period of time, like when being in nature-walking through a forest in the fall and seeing the sunshine through the trees or being in the comfort of your own home.  Rev. Douglas added to the discussion this morning, by talking about the ways in which we can grow joy in our day to day lives by taking the time to notice the good, to smile, and to laugh.  We encourage you to talk to your daughter this weekend about what she has learned about the difference between happiness and joy, and how she finds both.

Sincerely,
Kate White

Message from the Head of Junior School: October 5, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

Joy and gratitude filled the Brenda Robson Hall this morning, as we welcomed in the Thanksgiving weekend.    The girls, under the fabulous direction of Mr. Jeff MacLean and Ms. Rachel Read, sang so beautifully, and Mrs. Davy’s retelling of the story of  “Stone Soup” allowed us to reflect not only of our many blessings but on the importance of sharing the bounty.  We are also pleased to let you know that our community was able to collect 1445 pounds of food for the North York Harvest Food Bank. Thank you for your generosity.

On Tuesday, I am excited to welcome families to “Coffee with Kate” at 8:30 am in the Learning Hub.  At this time, I will share some of the ways in which we promote a positive school culture in the Junior School.

On behalf of all of the staff and faculty of the Junior School, we wish you a restful and happy Thanksgiving weekend.

Sincerely,
Kate White

Message from the Head of Junior School: September 28, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

I write today in disbelief that this my last blog post of September!  This month we have already experienced: the first day of school, People and Program Night, 11 prayers, our first Day 9, Athletic tryouts, Squad, Squad Team and Team Practices, and the first week of clubs, to say nothing of the start of academic learning in all subject areas.  As you look back on this time, we invite you to share any feedback on the opening weeks, so that we can thoughtfully reflect on what has gone well as well as what we should consider moving forward.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Ms. Irene Dongas to the Havergal Junior School Community.  Ms. Dongas is joining our Gator Care program as a supervisor, as well as our list of regular supply teachers.  She received her Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto in 2008, and has experience in both the Toronto District School Board and in Independent Schools.  Ms. Dongas brings to the school a love of learning, an understanding of the varied needs of students, and a deep belief in the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for all children.

We look forward to seeing you at Celebration Saturday!

Sincerely,
Kate White

Day 9: Wednesday, September 26

This past Wednesday was Havergal’s first Day 9 of the year. Whether it was our Junior and Senior Kindergarten students getting up close and personal with Pawsitively Pets, or our Grade 11s doing an Amazing Race throughout the city, it was an overwhelming success. Our students and faculty took advantage of the time and space to push themselves further, challenge themselves more, and think critically about some of the key issues facing our city, our country and ourselves. There is no doubt that our students are feeling more spirited about their grade after these shared experiences.
We would like to thank our parents for their cooperation, our faculty for their support in getting this Day 9 launched successfully, and to our students who engaged so highly throughout their experience.
Please be sure to check out our Instagram and Twitter feeds for some great photos that reflect the breadth and depth of our Day 9 Programming. If you are interested in becoming a part of our Day 9 programming or have some possible ideas, please contact Garth Nichols (gnichols@havergal.on.ca), VP Student Engagement and Experiential Learning.

Athletics

Thank you to all student-athletes for their participation in tryouts for the fall season. Our athletic program has the breadth to meet the needs of a diverse group of students, and the depth to challenge students at all stages of development. It also develops in all students: self-confidence, sportsmanship, commitment, perseverance, co-operation, responsibility, resilience, self-efficacy and pride in representing the school.

The Junior School is proud to have squads, squad teams and teams to support this philosophy.  We encourage those athletes who are not playing on the team of their choice to seek out their coach and find specific ways they can develop their skill.

Squads and Squad Teams start their practices this week. They will continue practicing once a week until Nov. 23rd.

We will be running practices on Wednesday, Sept 26th a ‘Day 9’.

Lice Squad – Tuesday, September 25

Communication and education about head lice with students and parents/guardians is essential for fostering a relationship of trust and respect in dealing with the issue. As such, we have arranged for the Lice Squad to come to the Junior School on Tuesday, September 25.  While the treatment of head lice is ultimately the parent/guardian’s responsibility it is our hope that through open and honest dialogue, the school and parents can work together to reduce the transmission of lice between individuals while maintaining the dignity of those affected by this nuisance.

Message from the Head of Junior School: September 14, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

Last week at prayers, we asked the girls to reflect on the 2017-2018 school year, and to ask themselves the following questions:

  • What went well?
  • What made you proud?
  • What was challenging?
  • What would you do differently now?

We then asked them to use this information to think about what they hope and dream about for the 2018-2019 school.  Students identified things such as “making new friends,” “getting on a team,” “trying something new,” “being a better writer,” “working hard in math” and “being the best I can be” as part of this list.

This morning in prayers, we then noted that each class from JK to Grade 6 has been discussing what respect looks, sounds and feels like at the Junior School, and what it means to be a Havergal student.  We talked about how it is one thing to know what respect is, and it is another to choose to be respectful.  Each student was then invited to think about how they will use respectful words and actions this year so that we can collectively accomplish our hopes and dreams. I invite you to talk about this with your daughter over the weekend and find out how she will choose to speak and act with respect this year.

Sincerely,
Kate White
