Message from the Head of Junior School: February 1, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

We have had another eventful week at the Junior School!  From guest speaker Chris Vollum’s talk on social media, to snow storms and frigid temperatures, the “January Jam” event for Canstruction, and the celebration of the Lunar New Year in Prayers this morning, this week has kept us hopping. I love how weeks like this remind me of how very supportive, engaged, and positive our community is. I wish you all a lovely and well deserved weekend.

Warmly,
Kate White

Gator Care Update

The new year started off with a buzzing and craft-filled Gator Care! As our after-care attendance grows, it is helpful to remind parents of where best to contact us during Gator Care.  Between 3:10 pm to 6:00 pm we can be reached at (416) 483-3843 ext. 7544, otherwise email is best or a voicemail to ext. 6928.

Also, a friendly reminder that forgotten items that are left behind in Gator Care will be left for a few days next to the front door of the Learning Hub and then afterwards are moved to the Lost and Found section behind the far side of the stage in the gymnasium.

Stay cool by keeping warm, Havergals!

Athletics

Intramurals are in full swing and the girls are enjoying playing games inside and escaping from the chill. Congratulations to the U11 Volleyball team for being undefeated this season!

The Gr. 3-12 students are looking forward to cheering on the Hockey Squad team at Hockey Day. Good Luck girls!

Message from the Head of Junior School: January 25th, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

Thank you for all of your congratulations this week! For those that have not heard, I am pleased to share that The Fraser Institute has ranked Havergal College Junior School as one of sixteen elementary schools in the province with a score of a perfect ten!  The report card ranks over 3,000 schools based on nine academic indicators from results of annual EQAO tests in reading, writing and math tests. The Junior School also received a score of a perfect 10 in 2012, and the Upper School was ranked second out of 749 schools in 2015.

Congratulations to all of our faculty and staff, as well as our students on these consistently excellent results.

Warmly,
Kate White

In this message, read about:

Havergal’s STEM Program

Havergal’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program gives students hands-on experience that piques their interest and confidence in areas where women are often underrepresented. By helping our students realize their potential in these areas, we know that their bright minds are working towards solving society’s most complex problems in their future careers!

To date, $12.6 million has been raised towards the Limitless Campaign, which will create even more opportunities for students to explore STEM through enhanced spaces that inspire learning. A new STEM classroom at the Junior School will provide students with habits of mind –– curiosity, deductive reasoning and problem-solving –– that promote innovation and discovery from a young age. At the Upper School, the custom-designed Makerspace and new technology education classrooms will create opportunities for students to tailor their STEM experience to their unique interests and passions.

Visit our online donations page to make a contribution towards the campaign. To learn more about how your gift will impact Havergal’s STEM program, watch our new video.

Message from the Head of Junior School: January 18th, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

Today marked the launch of Havergal’s 125th anniversary!  A big shout out to our prefects for organizing prayers, where they shared a video with all of the reasons we love Havergal so much, and a fun-filled trivia contest. Students then had delicious 125 cupcakes at lunch to get the celebration off to a sweet start.  Stay tuned for details on more events to come!

Book Drive for the Children’s Book Bank

Do you have gently used children’s books that your family has outgrown? Would you like to give those books a second life by donating them to children who cannot afford books of their own?

We are hosting a book drive during the week of January 14th for the Children’s Book Bank! We are looking for books that are:

– gently used i.e, no missing covers, torn pages, or pages with writing on them,

– suitable for children from birth to grade 6,

– and have been printed in the last 10 years ( print date of 2008 or later)

– (no teen or adult books please).

The mission of The Children’s Book Bank to provide children’s books and literacy support to children living in high needs communities in Toronto. The Book Bank is just like a wonderful children’s bookstore, except that the books are available to the children for FREE. Each child and visitor is allowed to select one book from the storefront to take home and keep forever.

Drop boxes will be located in our school in front of the Learning Hub.

For further information about the book drive, please contact Erica Rodd at erodd@havergal.on.ca.

For additional information about The Children’s Book Bank, please visit www.childrensbookbank.com.

Student Satisfaction Survey – Grades 5 & 6

Students in Grades 5 – 12 will be completing a “Student Satisfaction Survey” on Tuesday, January 22.  Students in Grades 5 and 6 will be completing the survey from 8:30 am – 9:00 am on this day.

The survey is a continuation of the school’s work in 2013 and 2016.  The questions are centred around the students (Grade 5 – 12) academic, co-curricular, and social-emotional experience and how Havergal provides support for our students as they work towards their goals. Results will be shared with the community in late Spring.

Athletics

Beyond the Ivy Walls

Our Havergal Junior School students pursue a vast array of activities beyond our walls. Their dedication and accomplishments are impressive, and we want to give students the opportunity to share their efforts with our community. Highlighting and celebrating our girls’ learning beyond our ivy walls not only allows us to get to know each other in different ways, but it may also serve as inspiration for others.

Accomplishments in any field are welcome: athletics, arts, academics, philanthropy, hobbies and more. Endeavours that represent the Havergal values of integrity, inquiry, compassion and/or courage are also encouraged.

How to submit:

If your daughter has an accomplishment from beyond the ivy walls that she would like to share, either you or your daughter may submit the accomplishment by email to Ms. Szolopiak sszolopiak@havergal.on.ca. Please use the subject line: Beyond The Ivy Walls, include 3 – 4 sentences describing the accomplishment,  as well as a good quality photo.

When to submit:

Submissions can be made at any time. Pictures and descriptions will be posted on the “Beyond The Ivy Walls” bulletin board outside of the Junior School gymnasium. Once a month, students will be recognized in Prayers so our community can celebrate their acts of excellence and perhaps be inspired to try something new or do something great beyond the ivy walls of Havergal College Junior School.

Wacky Festive Sweater Day on Monday (Can-Struction Fundraiser)!

Thank you so much for all of your donations to the Christmas food drive and to the Gr. 5 Can-struction Project.

Thank you and happy wacky Christmas sweater Monday!

Final day for donations – Friday, December 14

Grade 5 Needs Your Help!

Grade 5 would like to invite the Havergal Junior School Community to contribute to the Canstruction® Design Challenge (CLICK HERE  to learn more about this project). Here is how you can help:

Bring in a Green Can to School!

  • Each student, staff and faculty member is asked to bring in one can of food where the label is coloured primarily in green.
  • Each grade will use the cans to construct a Christmas Tree with the purpose of raising awareness about local food banks.

Havergal’s 125th Anniversary

In 2019 Havergal will mark a significant milestone: our 125th anniversary. We will commemorate the occasion with a special performance to celebrate Havergal’s 125 years of academic excellence.

We invite you to join us on Friday, May 3, 2019 at Roy Thomson Hall at 7 pm for Past, Present, Future, an evening of dance, drama and musical performances.

Tickets for this evening occasion will be released in mid-January 2019 and we will share additional details with you in the coming months. Please note that this performance will replace our spring music concerts for this year and will be mandatory for students in Grades 4 to 12. Similar to Carol Service, students will be seated with their peers and teachers in their Houses. We are excited to embark on this journey together and the year of celebrations to come!

Gator Care

Time has flown by here at Havergal, and the girls already are feeling a growing excitement for the holiday break and the New Year! With that in mind, we are ramping up the crafts activities in the after-school Gator Care: iron-on beads, ornaments, wreaths, dreidels, snowflakes and personalized stationery galore! The girls are encouraged as well to help lead and guide some of these crafting stations as they are underway, and many of the older girls find sincere enjoyment in helping the younger ones out.

Message from the Head of Junior School: November 23rd, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

As is often the case, we have been using prayers as an opportunity to share important messages with our community.  This week, Ms. Watt has been focusing on the importance of “choosing to be kind.”  First, she shared a powerful picture book entitled “Be Kind” by Pat Zietlow Miller.  The story explores what it means to be kind, from asking someone to play, to standing up for someone being bullied. It invites the reader to think about how any act, big or small, can make a difference.  In addition, Ms. Watt shared a video that addressed how one act of kindness, can lead to many others.  Finally, the poetry of our Grade 4 students, was highlighted as they have been exploring this topic in class as well. As part of this conversation,  we also investigated how conversely,  one unkind word or action can leave a mark on someone not just in the moment, but for years to come. Our message is, was, and will continue to be “choose kind.”

Sincerely,
Kate White

Christmas Concert Tickets

On Friday December 14th we invite you to attend the JK/SK Christmas concert from 2:00-3:00 pm in the JS Gym. Tickets ARE NOT required for this event.  We warmly welcome parents, family members and friends to come join us for this festive event.

On Tuesday December 18th at 4:00 pm, we invite you to attend the JS Grades 1-6 Christmas Concert in the Brenda Robson Hall. The girls are sure to leave you in a festive mood as they perform songs for the holiday season.

Two concert tickets will be given to your daughter in her Core Class on December 3rd. We’d ask that if you have extra tickets , you return them to the JS Office for re-distribution.

On December 3rd, you may contact the Front Office to request up to 2 extra tickets. These seats will be given out on a first come first served basis.

As tickets become available you will be notified by the front office the week of December 10th.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Holiday Giving

As in previous years, we will be collecting gently used outdoor winter gear (coats, snowpants, boots, hats, mitts, etc…)  for New Circles , a long-time Havergal Community Partnership.  Drop-off bins will be placed in front of the Learning Hub.

In addition, as part of our Day 9 initiative, students in Grade 5 have been learning about the food needs of people in our community, with an organization called the  “Canstruction Design Challenge.”  To learn more about the work that they have been doing: CLICK HERE

The Grade 5 students would like to involve our community in their work with the “Bring a Can to School Day” initiative.

  • Each student (and faculty/staff member) is asked to bring in a can of food with a label that is coloured primarily green, (if other colours they will be used as “ornaments”).
  • Each class will then use the cans to construct a “Christmas Tree” to raise awareness around the need for food banks in our city.  The cans will then be donated to the North York Community Food Bank, another long time community partnership.
  • The Grade 5s will be explaining their work to the Junior School students at an upcoming prayers, so they have an understanding of what this initiative is all about.
  • We ask that all cans are brought in to school by December 14.
