Message from the Head of Junior School: April 26, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

I found myself feeling exceptionally proud to be part of the Havergal community again this week.  Yesterday, students from Grade 1 – 12 celebrated Founders’ Day at St. Paul’s Cathedral.  We had a visit from “Ellen Knox” herself, who read an address she made to graduates almost 125 ago, heard reflections from both a Grade 12 student, and an “Old Girl” from 1964 who shared what being a Havergal Girl means to them, listened to the inspiring words of Principal Helen-Kay Davy about the importance of aspiring to be our best selves,  and were dismissed by a Havergal Old Girl, and her daughter who is currently a student.  Another highlight for all was the spectacular performance of our Junior School choir, who sang beautifully about promise and possibility. Wishing you all a lovely weekend.  We look forward to what will be another fantastic community event next Friday, as we celebrate Havergal, Past, Present, and Future.

Sincerely,

Kate White

Message from the Head of Junior School: April 12th, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

Today marked a special day in the Junior School as our Kindergarten and Grade 12 students joined together for the “Kindergarten-Grad Tea-Party in the Brenda Robson Hall.”  This lovely event brings our youngest and oldest learners together. at the bookend of their time at Havergal. On another note, we were once again blown away in prayers this morning by our talented Grade 6 students. With a beautiful vocal performance, and a powerful presentation on “Women Worth Knowing,” it was the perfect way to end the week!  Be sure to check out Havergal’s social media pages for coverage of both.

Primary and Junior Parent Math Academy Session

Kudos to the primary and junior parents who participated in a half-day mathematics learning session, Tuesday April 9 about “Number Structures.”  Together, we learned about the significance of number structure within and across the grades.  While we solved math problems and discussed solutions, we also developed an understanding of the purpose and impact of the mathematics that the girls are learning at the Junior School. As one of the parents reminded us, “At the Junior School, the girls are learning Mathematics, not doing arithmetic.”  Stay tuned for next year’s series of Primary and Junior Parent Math Academy sessions.

Message from the Head of Junior School: April 5th, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

This morning in prayers, we spoke about the power of forgiveness.  Like all of the other traits we have spoken about this year, such as respect, kindness, joy, honesty, gratitude and compassion, it is often much easier said than done! I encourage you to speak with your daughter this weekend about what forgiveness is NOT (forgetting, expected to happen right away, keeping score) and what forgiveness IS (a choice, understanding that nobody is perfect, good for our physical and mental health).  We then ended the message with a guided meditation to help us practice how to more easily “forgive and forget.”

Sincerely,

Kate White

Message from the Head of Junior School: March 8, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

This morning, we celebrated International Women’s Day with a presentation by some of our Grade 6 students.  They shared the story of Theresa Malkiel, who started the first International Women’s Day in 1909.  The focus of this year’s event is on the role of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).  Some of the students spoke about their own ambitions to pursue careers in these fields.  We have no doubt they will go far!

As we head into the two-week March Break, we would like to thank you all for a wonderful term of learning, growth and the community spirit. Please take a moment to read through the information below so that you are up to date when we return after March Break. We wish you all a healthy and happy holiday with family and friends.

Sincerely,

Kate White

Junior School Support Community Partners

Be a part of connecting communities: Junior School, Senior School and Art City!

Art City is a local non-profit organization that encourages young people to put their imaginations to work. Using visual art as a vehicle to foster creativity, Havergal students design, facilitate and work with buddies and local professional artists on shared art projects. Art city offers programming free of charge to engage the community’s most vulnerable youth in a safe and non-discriminatory environment located in in St. James Town.

Shanti Mehta, a grade 11 student and co-head of the Art City Community Partnership has stewarded a collaborative project for grade 2 Havergal students and Art city participants to create cards via printmaking. All proceeds will go to Art City to support their year-long programming.

These cards make great thank you notes, or personalized greeting cards. Come out to get yours, they will go fast!

Cards are being sold on March 28th in the Junior School.

Message from the Head of Junior School: March 1, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

On Tuesday, Havergal students celebrated Pink Shirt Day as a way to raise awareness about bullying.  We held two separate assemblies, one for students in JK – Grade 3, and one for students in Grades 4 – 6.  We spoke to the girls about how their words and actions can have a lasting impact on those around them, as well as what the difference is between being rude, being mean, and bullying.  We defined these as follows:

  • RUDE: When someone says or does something UNINTENTIONALLY hurtful and they do it once.
  • MEAN: When someone says or does something INTENTIONALLY and they do it once.
  • BULLYING: When someone says or does something INTENTIONALLY hurtful and they KEEP doing it – even when you tell them to stop or show them that you’re upset.

Finally, we also reminded the girls that they are not expected to handle these things all on their own, and to reach out to a parent or other trusted adult when they need help. Please continue to engage your daughter in conversation on this very important issue.

Sincerely,

Kate White

SPRING BOOK FAIR with ELLA MINNOW

March 4 – 8, 2019

Why are we hosting a book fair when we can just buy books online or at Indigo?

  • Having a book fair is an opportunity for students to practice taking responsibility for their choices; managing money, and managing expectations.
  • Our library also directly benefits from a Book Fair, as 20% of all sales goes toward new books for the library.

What can you do to support your daughter?

  • During the week of the book fair, your daughter will have an opportunity to browse the fair and make a wish list. The wish list is a tool for your daughter’s decision-making process. When she brings it home, please have a conversation with her to help her make her choices. Please indicate on her wishlist what her choices are, and send the wishlist back to school with her. She will have time to shop with her class on Thursday or Friday.
  • In keeping with the learning opportunities presented by the book fair, we ask that parents do not purchase books from their daughter’s wish lists until after she has had a chance to do so herself.

What if the book fair sells out of my daughter’s chosen books before her scheduled shopping time?

  • Ella Minnow will bring copies of any books that sell out to the school. This usually happens during the week after March Break.

Can I still purchase books myself from the Book Fair?

  • Yes, of course! If your daughter’s wish list is very long, or if you would like to make purchases for a special occasion or as a surprise, the book fair will be open from 9-5 on Thursday and 8-3:30 Friday.
  • Ella Minnow accepts Visa, Mastercard, Debit, cash, or cheque made payable to Ella Minnow books. We can also charge purchases to your daughter’s account.

If you have any questions, please contact Erica Rodd at erodd@havergal.on.ca or by phone at 416-483-3843, extension 7544.

Beyond the Ivy Walls

Our Havergal Junior School students pursue a vast array of activities beyond our walls. Their dedication and accomplishments are impressive, and we want to give students the opportunity to share their efforts with our community. Highlighting and celebrating our girls’ learning beyond our ivy walls not only allows us to get to know each other in different ways, but it also serves as inspiration for others. Accomplishments in any field are welcome: athletics, arts, academics, philanthropy, hobbies and more. Endeavours that represent the Havergal values of integrity, inquiry, compassion and/or courage are also encouraged.

Please feel free to submit your daughter’s accomplishments by using the below link:

Athletics

We are so proud of our U12 Girls Hockey Team who played BSS during the intermission of Hockey Day. Jane White & Kasia Novic were the Gr. 6 leaders on the team who both blasted up from the defense each scoring a beautiful goal. Well done Gators!
