A Message from the Head of the Junior School: Friday, March 4, 2022

Dear Junior School Parents,

We, like you, have been watching the devastating humanitarian crisis in Ukraine with profound sadness and disbelief. As we are steadfast in our mission to prepare women to make a difference, we recognize the strength and courage of all of those involved. As a global community, with boarding students, faculty and staff from around the world, we are acutely aware of the many personal connections to what is happening. Many of our students have questions about what is happening, and are trying to make sense of what they are seeing and hearing. We are navigating these conversations at Havergal, in ways that are age and stage appropriate and wanted to re-share some resources that may be helpful, for discussions at home.

In addition, we also wanted to share a couple of donation opportunities, initiated by members of our community: Ukraine Relief Donation Opportunities.

Sincerely,

Kate White – Head, Junior School

JJ Patterson – Head, Middle School

Deirdre Timusk – Head, Senior School

  • Havergal will be discontinuing the school-wide Rapid Antigen Screening Program (RASP) for all fully vaccinated students at the beginning of March Break (March 11) and all student accounts  will be deactivated. Upcoming Parent Engagement Events

  • Keeping them Safe while Helping them Grow: Supporting children’s emotional growth in challenging times; Featuring psychologist Dr. Alex Russell
    • Over the two past two years, the shutting down of children’s activities has had significant impacts on their academic, social and emotional development, as well as placing incredible strains on parents and educators. As we begin to return to normal, this workshop offers parents an understanding of these academic, social and emotional impacts, as well as clear and helpful guidelines to help support children in the months and years ahead. Parents gain a perspective that helps them slowly shift the burden of responsibility on to their children as they grow – something that helps children take on anxiety adaptively, at the same time as they experience the sense of mastery and competence such growth generates.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School: Friday, February 25, 2022

Dear Junior School Parents,

This Wednesday, members of the HC community participated in Pink Shirt Day. Today, our Junior School Prefect, Tomisin, shared The Story of Pink Shirt Day, helped explain what bullying is and is not, ways to stand up for yourself and The Importance of Being an Upstander. Finally, she invited us to take part in “The Kindness Challenge,” which was put together by the Junior School Council, made up of Upper School students.

Finally, in recognition of the turmoil occurring in the world, and those affected by it, we closed our time together this morning with the following prayer:

Gracious Lord, some areas of your and our fragile world are experiencing injustice and oppression right now. Please grant peace and hope to all who experience heartache and despair. Help the world know what is right and what is wrong. Grant your wisdom to those in authority in our nations to bring your just and respectful rule. In your goodness, encourage us to pray always for peace and for an end to division among persons, countries and nations. May justice prevail everywhere. Where we are, may our prayerful support of one another be known, and felt  as we work together for the end of all conflict and for lasting peace.

Sincerely,

Kate

Dear Junior School Parents,

What an amazing spirit week it was! Junior School students once again brought their “A” game, each and every day. The bright colours, laughter and sense of community was just the thing to give us all a boost in the cold days of February. The icing on the cake was definitely the return of Hockey Day, where we were able to join in for the pep rally as a whole school, and cheer on our HC Team. The 5 – 2 victory made it all the sweeter.

This week’s blog contains information on the following:

Wishing you all a joyful Family Day Weekend.

Sincerely,

  • Accessing classes via Zoom is only available for students isolating due to COVID-19 or those with a medical/visa accommodation.
    • If a student is away due to COVID-19 isolation, families should communicate this to the school by putting a note/reason in SchoolPass that says “isolating.” It might take up to 24hrs for teachers to make their Zoom links available to a student depending on when we get the information. Assessments will be written in person unless the teacher requests otherwise.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, February 11, 2022

Dear Junior School Parents,

Black History Month is recognized each February. This year’s theme is: “February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day,” which focuses on recognizing the daily contributions that Black Canadians make to Canada.

This morning in prayers, the Junior School welcomed Grade 12 students Marley (HC School Captain) and Tomisin (Junior School Prefect). As two of our school’s leaders, they shared some of their experiences as black women at the school, as well as some of the people they have looked to as sources of inspiration, including: Serena Williams, Amanda Gorman, Beyonce, Skai Jackson, Simone Biles, and Rosa Parks. Marley and Tomisin challenged us to think about what “representation” means, and why it is important to be able to “see yourself in those around you.”  I encourage you to speak with your daughters this weekend about their learnings from this morning’s prayers. In addition, I invite you to explore some of the resources below as a family:

The Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada

  • We are thrilled to share that a learning resource described as a comprehensive atlas on Indigenous lands, languages and culture in Canada, the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada is coming back to Havergal! Specifically, students in the Junior School will have the opportunity to engage with this amazing resource on March 9th and March 10.
  • This project was funded by the federal government, and  was developed by Indigenous groups working with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. The Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada, which includes a four-volume set of books, an online interactive atlas and many other components.
  • To further enrich this experience, we have also collaborated with Dr. Margaret Brigham during this week from Indigenous Storytelling to work with each of our classes. Dr. Brigham (Ojibwe) is from Walpole Island First Nation in southern Ontario. Her work includes experience as a classroom teacher, First Nation school principal, private sector consultant on diversity and equity issues, sociology professor and college administrator. She served on the City of Toronto Aboriginal Affairs Advisory Committee, and the Provincial Aboriginal Postsecondary Education Policy Working Group.

COVID-19 Testing Options

  • Please consult the COVID-19 Testing Options for Individuals With Symptoms document for more information about testing options available when you have symptoms, and returning to school after having symptoms and testing negative. Remember that tests must be separated by at least 24-48 hours and that a single positive Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) is considered a positive result, requiring isolation for COVID-19.  Please make sure to upload positive results into Thrive (and encourage students to do this!) so the Health Centre is aware and can provide guidance on isolation and returning to school. RAT Swabs are to be used as nasal swabs, however emerging evidence suggests nasal/cheek/throat samples may increase test sensitivity, check-out this Ontario Science Advisory Table video COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test: Sample Collection for Omicron for further guidance and technique, if desired.

Rapid Antigen Testing

  • Families may consult the COVID-19 Testing Options for Individuals With Symptoms document for more information about testing options available at Havergal, and returning to school after having symptoms and testing negative. Remember that the student must have 2 negative tests separated by at least 24-48 hours and that a single positive Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) is considered a positive result, requiring isolation for COVID-19. Please make sure to upload positive results into Thrive, so the Health Centre is aware and can provide guidance on isolation and returning to school.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School: Friday, February 4, 2022

Dear Junior School Parents,

The 2022 Winter Olympics have begun!

Canada has sent 215 athletes and 85 coaches to Beijing this year. With 109 men and 106 women, the Canadian Olympic Committee says this is the most gender-balanced squad it has ever sent to a Winter Games. Knowing how many amazing athletes we have in the HC community, I wanted to share some fun facts that I hope act as inspiration for your daughters. Not only are these women elite athletes, but each has also shown tremendous dedication, determination, the ability to persist through challenges and stay focused under pressure.

  • The youngest woman competing on the team is sixteen-year-old snowboarder Brooke D’Hondt of Calgary
  • The oldest woman competing on the team is 47-year-old curler Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg
  • Marie-Philip Poulin, the – Women’s Hockey Team Captain, also known as “Captain Clutch” is a three-times Games medallist (gold in 2010, 2014, and silver in 2018) and leads a team looking to reclaim its Olympic title. The team is made up of 23 players – 13 veterans and 10 first-timers. Olympic rookie Sarah Fillier got the team off to a strong start with a pair of first period goals, helping Canada to a big 12-1 victory over Switzerland
  • Siblings Chloe and Justine Dufour-Lapointe will compete against each other in women’s moguls for the third straight Games. They also shared the podium at Sochi 2014.
  • Cynthia Appiah from Toronto, competes in Bobsled. While the last Olympics were a heartbreaker, Appiah was an alternate after pushing Canada’s top two-woman sled to multiple World Cup medals. She came back with a vengeance by becoming a top pilot in time to chart her own course for Beijing. As a Black athlete in winter sports the 31-year-old is hoping to inspire others. Her best medal shot comes in the new women’s monobob event.
  • We are cheering ESPECIALLY hard for HC alum Ali Nullmeyer, who is at her first Olympics representing Team Canada in Alpine Skiing! You can watch her in the Slalom that airs at 9 pm on Tuesday (Feb 8)!

I encourage you to tune in the weeks to come in support of all of our Canadian athletes.

Sincerely,

Kate

  • We are continuing to monitor the safe arrival and dismissal of students each day.
  • Our amazing team of teachers and security professionals are here to support in this process.
  • Here are the TOP FIVE ways we need your support:
  1. Have students ready to exit as soon as your car stops alongside the curb. By waiting to drop off nearest the doors, it slows down the flow of traffic.

  1. Abide by the signage both on and off school property. This includes: driving 10 km along the driveway, not parking along the driveway during peak times, no double parking, or stopping in restricted zones on Rosewell Ave.
  1. Crossing at the designated crosswalk with the crossing guard and flashing pylons, and not across the driveway exit.
  1. Following the directions of our security team.

Dear Junior School Parents,

  • Parents who would prefer that their children not skate are asked to communicate this to their child’s HPE teacher in writing, clarifying that their child has permission to go on the excursion but that they will not skate

Vaccine Documentation

  • As you are aware, the COVID-19 vaccine was approved for children aged 5-11 at the end of November 2021. The College encourages parents to get their children aged 5-11 vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine to prevent serious illness, to make our school and activities safer, and to reduce the risk of outbreaks or disruptions at school. The Health Centre has begun to collect vaccination documentation for children aged 5-11. You can reference our Upper School Student Vaccine Policy for further information on how vaccine documentation is confidentially stored.
  • If your child has received their COVID-19 vaccine please let us know by:
    • Emailing the Health Centre at covid@havergal.on.ca
    •  Subject line: COVID-19 Vaccination Student Name
    •  Include a screenshot or copy of the student’s official COVID-19 vaccination receipts, or a letter from a health care provider confirming the student has received a full series of the COVID-19 vaccination.
