A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, March 31, 2023

Dear JS Families,

Welcome Back! It has been such a treat to welcome everyone back to school after the March Break. While the weather may not be cooperating just yet, spring is here, with more hours of sunshine, warmer weather, and the promise of exciting events ahead. The last term always seems to go by in a flash, with summer just a few months away. I love this time of year at Havergal because the growth of the students from September to now is so evident! We are truly in “the flow,” which offers the opportunity for so much learning, and the ability to simply enjoy being together in community.

If you haven’t had a chance to stop by the Junior School this week, we’ve got some amazing new artwork highlighting Athletics in the JS! A huge thank you to our Athletic Director, Ms. Bartlett and our incredible colleagues in the Marketing and Communications’ Department for bringing this to life!

Warmly,

Kate

Lost & Found – Labelling Student Uniforms and Materials

While students are supported by their teachers to keep track of their personal belongings and uniform pieces at school, it is also extremely helpful that these items are clearly labelled with their names.

As you can imagine, un-labelled uniform pieces all look alike, which makes it extremely difficult to ensure that items are reunited with the appropriate person. In addition, unlabelled water-bottles, coats, mitts and hats, etc… can easily go astray!

We will continue to work with students to practise personal responsibility of their belongings, and appreciate your support in ensuring that materials are labelled correctly.

Dressing For the Weather

While March 20 is the official first day of Spring, Mother Nature isn’t always aligned! Please ensure that your child comes to school dressed appropriately so that she can fully participate in outdoor play at recess, regardless of what the weather is!

Please refer to the JS Athletics Schedule.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, March 10, 2023

Dear JS Families,

I wanted to take this opportunity to provide a sincere note of thanks to everyone for a fantastic second term! As I type this in my office, the snow is falling as we prepare for a two week break. I am very much looking forward to warmer days, sunny skis, and all of the exciting learning, and special events that will take place once we return and until the end of the year.

This week we celebrated International Women’s Day, and were so pleased to welcome two HC alum, and current parents in the Junior School to speak with us about their work, and the women who have inspired them along the way. It was such a valuable experience to see how these formidable women are not only living the Havergal values in their day to day lives, but have truly fulfilled Havergal’s mission in being women who make a difference.

Then, this morning, we had the opportunity to learn more about Norwuz from both Junior and Senior School students who celebrate. Some of our youngest learners in JK and SK who courageously came to the podium to share what this holiday means to them. A special note of thanks to the many parents who came today, and supported this very special prayers.

I wish you all a healthy and happy two weeks ahead, and am eager to welcome everyone back to school on Tuesday, March 28.

Warmly,

Kate

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, March 3, 2023

Dear JS Families,

As a parent, I am accustomed, when asking my two children what they did at school today, to hear the response “nothing!” I can very much assure you that this is definitely not ever the case in the Junior School! While the JS is always a hive of activity, here are just some of the highlights from this week:

  • Students were greeted warmly with an impromptu dance party earlier this week, by our JS Prefect and some of her friends!
  • Upper School and Junior School students worked together on the messaging for Monday’s prayers, which was a celebration of the end of Black History Month;
  • We hosted TEN U12 Volleyball teams at HC Wednesday, in both the JS and US gyms;
  • Our U12 Swim Team went to the Markham Pan Am Swimming and participated the end of season meet;
  • The U12 Hockey Team was invited to participate in a tournament at UCC, where they played boys’ teams from across the GTA. HC girls came out strong, where they won their first game 6-2, and tied their second game 4-4.
  • Grade 5 students crossed the bridge to the Brenda Robson Hall yesterday, and presented their flashmob dance to the Upper School on Thursday;
  • We ended the week with “Ableism Prayers” this morning, and learned about how several groups of students in the JS are thinking deeply about  how we can change our community to make our environment inclusive and accessible to all. This included students in Grades 3 and 4 who visited Variety Village this week, and participated in their Ability in Action program! This program provides interactive awareness activities to students to help them learn about & experience inclusive games & sports. Our Gr. 3s & 4s were able to play wheelchair tail tag, curling, and seated volleyball. The group also spoke about how some of our Grade 6s have been working with students at the Holland Bloorview School Authority, to create and adapt carnival games.

So, when you speak to your child this weekend about things that happened over the course of the week…know that if they say “nothing…” it’s not true! Be sure to check out our social media pages for some great pictures from the week!

Warmly,

Kate

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, February 24, 2023

Dear JS Families,

It was a “Sea of Pink” in the Junior School today! Students have been learning about the significance of Pink Shirt Day throughout the week, and understanding the difference between rude, mean and bullying behaviours. To learn more about the important distinction between these, I encourage you to read the article, Rude, Mean, or Bullying? A Child Therapist Defines the Differences from the website “A Mighty Girl.” We also spoke about the courage that it takes to be an “upstander” when you see someone being treated unfairly. This short video also provides some great strategies to talk through with your child, about how they can stand up to bullying.

Havergal believes that a healthy, safe and inclusive learning environment where all students feel accepted is a necessary condition for student success. While Pink Shirt Day is definitely an opportunity to highlight the importance of kindness, it is something that we actively work on every day, and is guided by our values – inquiry, integrity, compassion and courage, so that the Junior School is a place that our students want to come to everyday because they feel safe, known, respected, and that they belong. Some of the policies and procedures that we have in place to support us in this work include:

As always, should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out, so that we can work together in the best interest of your child.

Warmly,

Kate

Support for Turkey and Syria

Students at Havergal are asking for our community’s support. As most of you know, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit 11 cities in Turkey and Northwest Syria last week. Turkey was also hit with an aftershock with a magnitude of 7.5. The current death toll is estimated to be around 30,000 and the numbers keep increasing. This is why we decided to raise money to donate to victims in both countries. Havergal has partnered with Red Cross Canada to create a donation page to send donations, which you can access via the link below.

Please remember that even with $5 you can donate 13 loaves of bread, 10 bottles of water, 7 pairs of socks, or 2 blankets. Every dollar matters, thank you Havergal. Our goal is to raise $3000 in aid by March Break! Havergal Donation Page

If you mark this holiday in your home and your child is interested in participating in the prayers on March 10th, please email Liz Watt at lwatt@havergal.on.ca by Friday March 3rd at noon. We will try and include every student who has volunteered, but if there is an abundance of interest, we will add each volunteered students’ name to our prospective speaker list to be included later in the year. Students who have been selected will be contacted.

Havergal’s Nut Allergy Statement

Several Havergal students, faculty and staff have life threatening allergies. Exposure to even a tiny amount of an allergen can trigger a reaction that could prove fatal within minutes. Havergal College exercises reasonable care to ensure that all persons are safe; however, the school cannot assume responsibility for providing a completely allergen-free environment.

Ensuring the safety of all anaphylactic persons in a school setting and at school-sanctioned co-curricular events depends on the cooperation of the entire school community including parents, students, faculty, staff, business and operations personnel and volunteers. We appreciate your sensitive attention to this matter.

Dear JS Families,

What a wonderful week of connection, community building and spirit it has been! While February days can sometimes feel long and dark, the mood at Havergal was anything but. From Dress Down Days, to special activities led by our US Prefects, sweet treats, and cheering on the Havergal Hockey team it felt like a week of celebration. A special congratulations to our U12 Hockey Team who won their game against BSS at their first game together as a team at The Mattamy Centre! Congratulations to everyone for such a fabulous week

As we head into the midterm Family Day long-weekend, I hope that this time provides you with an opportunity to pause, and enjoy time together.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, February 10, 2023

Dear JS Families,

It was another exciting and full week in the Junior School!

We had close to 150 prospective families here this week for interviews and assessments, as we look towards 2023-2024. A huge note of thanks to our Admission Team, Faculty and Teachers who all came together to ensure that this was a positive and welcoming experience!

We also had three field trips go out this week, including a trip to Black Creek Pioneer Village (Gr. 3), a visit to the Aga Khan Museum (Gr. 5), and a walking tour of ChinaTown and Kensington Market (Gr. 6).

It was especially lovely to have so many families join us for the Grade Family Breakfast on Wednesday in the Brenda Robson Hall. Grade 5 is an entry year, meaning that we have a number of students who have joined our community for the first time, alongside families that have been at Havergal since JK. This kind of event is the perfect opportunity to further come together as a grade and to strengthen connections.

Next week promises to offer just as much excitement as we celebrate Spirit Week, from JK – Grade 12. We have so much planned for the week, and look forward to sharing photos throughout the week on social media.

Warmly,

Kate

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, February 3, 2023

Dear JS Families,

I hope that everyone is staying safe and warm on this cold and sunny January day!

I have no doubt that parent-teacher conferences were a wonderful opportunity to check in with your child’s teachers. These are really important conversations when we come together as partners to discuss how your daughter is continuing to grow and learn academically and socially. When I see the teachers prepare for these meetings, I am in awe of how deeply they know each child, seeing their many strengths, areas for growth, and next steps. It is also my hope that it further reinforces your decision that Havergal is a place where your daughter can thrive.

Wishing you all a lovely, if somewhat frosty, weekend ahead!

Warmly,

Kate

Update on Havergal’s Strategic Planning Process

As highlighted earlier in the fall, Havergal is well-positioned and the time is right to think about our future direction. The work on the CAIS accreditation Self-Study and the data collection phase with our strategy consulting partners at Berlineaton has closed and we have begun the work of prioritizing and planning. We are grateful to the many parents, students, Old Girls/Alums, past parents, faculty, staff, and board members who participated in the questionnaire and discussion groups on Havergal’s future.

We had over double the number of responses that Berlineaton typically sees for a community our size. In addition, we had strong participation in the group consultations with over 120 students, parents, faculty/staff leaders, and Old Girls/Alums in our CAIS review and strategy focus group sessions. This period of reflection has ignited excitement about our future.

From the questionnaire and focus group sessions, we saw broad community alignment with our school mission – to prepare young women to make a difference – and our core values of inquiry, integrity, compassion & courage. Our position as a leading girls’ school, grounded in the advancement of girls and women, and giving the next generation of girls the skills needed to make positive change, resonates with our internal and external community.

From this internal and external Scan phase, a number of consistently articulated school strengths and areas for investment emerged.

Identified areas of strength included: the breadth and strength of our academic and cocurricular program; a track record of successfully preparing students for the rigours of university study; the strength of our caring, dedicated, and skilled teaching faculty; the size and scope of our campus and facilities; the many global and experiential learning opportunities; an exceptionally strong school community and pride in the school.

Identified areas for investment included: increasing the socio-economic and cultural diversity in the student body and faculty/staff; more exposure for students to learning opportunities such as internships, credential-earning, GAP year, and further post-secondary options; facility upgrades in outdoor athletics, boarding, student commons, older classrooms, and wellbeing space; the recruitment and retention of top faculty in an increasingly competitive labour market; and finally, further investment in personalized, comprehensive wellbeing support for students.

The strategy development team continues to work in collaboration with the Board on the development of Havergal’s strategic direction and is looking forward to sharing updates with our community over the coming months.  You can view the status of our progress on our website. Thank you to all those who participated in sharing your feedback, ideas, and hopes for Havergal’s future.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, January 27, 2023

Dear JS Families,

Today, in honour of Bell’s “Let’s Talk Day,” we talked about the importance of mental health, as well as specific strategies to help us when we are experiencing “big emotions.” Here are some resources that we shared with the students this morning. I wanted to be sure to pass these along to you, so that you can continue to engage in conversations at home.

Finally, I encourage you to visit the Bell’s Let’s Talk webpage, that provides

Tools to help everyone with mental health!

I wish you all a lovely weekend, with lots of fun playing in the freshly fallen snow!

Warmly,

Kate

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, January 13, 2023

Dear JS Families,

Welcome Back! I can’t tell you how thrilled we were to welcome everyone back to school this week! We all came together first thing on Tuesday Morning for a message from Dr. Samson, who spoke to us about setting new intentions for the new year, and how practicing self-compassion can help us navigate the ups and downs of everyday life. Then, today, Ms. Watt and I took a step back to the beginning of the year, when we first discussed the “norms” of the Junior School, which include: greeting others by name, opening doors for others, wearing our uniform with pride, and including others in our work and play.

Our Grade 5s also surprised JS students, faculty, staff, and parents this morning with a flash mob at Prayers! Students worked hard to put their dance together, to the tune of “Jerusalema.” The audience was delighted by their fun and creative routine – a representation of hope, unity, and teamwork. It brought sheer joy to all of us, and was just the perfect way to welcome in the weekend. I am including a link for you to see their amazing performance.

Grade 5 FlashMob

Finally, we took a moment to wish Ms. Prosser well, as she begins her parental leave, and to welcome new teachers Ms. Verity (SK), Ms. McCleary (Gr. 3), and Ms. Cozier (Executive Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) to the Havergal community.

Warmly,

Kate

Safe Arrival and Dismissal of Students – Top 5 Things We Need Your Help With

We are continuing to monitor the safe arrival and dismissal of students each day.

Our amazing team of teachers and security professionals are here to support in this process.

Here are the TOP FIVE ways we need your support:

  1. Have students ready to exit as soon as your car stops alongside the curb. By waiting to drop off nearest the doors, it slows down the flow of traffic.
  2. Arrive at your designated pick-up time:
    • JK: 3:00 pm
    • SK: 3:15 pm
    • Grades 1 – 3: 3:20 pm
    • Grade 4 – 6: 3:40 pm (along with younger siblings)
  3. Abide by the signage both on and off school property. This includes: driving 10 km along the driveway, not parking along the driveway during peak times, no double parking, or stopping in restricted zones on Rosewell Ave.
  4. Crossing at the designated crosswalk with the crossing guard and flashing pylons, and not across the driveway exit.
  5. Following the directions of our security team.

Update to Concussion and Head Injuries Policy

Havergal has recently updated and revised the Concussion & Head Injuries Policy

We are excited to share this new version.  This update has been written to support both the cognitive and physical development to the greatest benefit of our students.

We invite you to view our Concussion Information Session for Parents to learn more about Concussion & Head Injury management at the College.

An Invitation from Lakefield College School  – Tuesday, January 23

Community and Connection: LCS Speaker Series for Parents

Feeling Seen: Reconnecting in a Disconnected World

As part of Lakefield College School’s Community and Connection: Speaker Series for Parents, we invite CAIS parents and educators to join us for a talk from Dr. Jody Carrington on Tuesday, January 23 at 7:00 PM ET via Zoom.

Dr. Carrington is a psychologist, best-selling author, and public speaker with an affinity for helping teams and organizations overcome their most complex, human-centred problems. Her radiant energy and incomparable ability to connect with audiences result in compelling keynotes and life-changing workshops.

The message is simple: we are wired to do the hard things, but we are so much braver together.

Jody speaks passionately (and humourously) about resilience, burnout, mental health, leadership, grief and trauma– and how reconnection answers so many of the root problems we face.

Register for Dr. Carrington’s talk
