Dear Junior School Families,

This week, we celebrated two very special Havergal events. 

The first was the “Margueritte Reception” held on Tuesday evening. This event honours and celebrates years of partnership, friendship, and unwavering support at Havergal. It is filled with laughter and heartfelt memories with these remarkable graduates who have called Havergal home since Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten, or Gr. 1. 

The second was the “Teddy-Bear Picnic,” held yesterday at lunch at the Quilted Garden, which is located just beside the lower pitch. This magical event brings our youngest students (JK, SK, Gr.1) together with the graduating class. It is an opportunity for them to connect, have fun, and celebrate the end of their respective years.

These heartwarming events not only serve as rites of passage but also underscore the incredible journey students at Havergal undertake. The students graduating this year were in Grade 1 when I first arrived here. I have seen them, through the support of parents, teachers, and friends, grow into the most remarkable young women who truly understand themselves and others, continue to learn and grow, and are inspired to act. 

As I look at our JKs, SKs, and Grade 1s, along with all those students who join their classes along the way, I can’t help but imagine all the ways that they will grow, change, and accomplish! I am, as always, so grateful to work in this remarkable community, and thank you for all that you bring to it.

Gator Day – All You Need to Know for Friday, June 5 (12:35 pm – 3:00 pm on Cohen Field)

What is GatorDay?

• Gator Day first started at Havergal in 1935! Students from JK – Grade 6 participate in various physical activities/challenges in their houses, for a chance to win the coveted “Gator Day Cup.” It is an afternoon filled with just the right amount of competitive spirit, house pride, and, most importantly, FUN! 

What to wear:

• House, or House coloured T-shirt
• Havergal shorts, leggings or sweatpants
• Running shoes
• Hair should be tied up (No additional house hair accessories)

What to bring:

• Sunscreen
• A hat (labelled)
• A water bottle  (labelled)

Special thanks to the HCPA, who have generously donated the fruit platters our students will enjoy at the end of the event! These will be distributed by our AMAZING Grade 6 students, who have acted as house leaders throughout the year!

Submit Your Child(ren)’s Health Information for Next Year 2026 – 2027 (Due: June 30th)

As part of our annual preparation for the upcoming school year, we ask all families to provide updated health information for their child(ren).

Beginning this year, Havergal College will be using August Schools, a new platform for managing student health information. After a thorough review of available systems, we believe August Schools will provide a more streamlined experience for families while enhancing our ability to support students’ physical and emotional wellbeing.

As part of this transition, families will be asked to resubmit their health information and any relevant health documents previously provided through Magnus Health. We recognize that this requires some additional effort, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and partnership as we make this change.

What to Expect:

On June 1, families will receive an email with:

• Instructions for accessing August Schools through the Parent Portal
• Information about completing and submitting required health forms
• Helpful resources, including tips and troubleshooting guidance for navigating the new platform

We ask that all health information be submitted by June 30 to help ensure we are prepared to support students when school resumes in September.

Green & Gold Shop Summer Hours

To help you plan ahead for the first day of school, please order any necessary uniform items before the Havergal College Green & Gold Shop closes for the summer.

• This will be our last time coming together as a community for Prayers during the 2025-2026 school year. It will be an opportunity to celebrate our collective learning this year as a Junior School.

Friday, June 5 – Gator Day (12:35 pm – 3:00 pm)

• Gator Day extends back to 1935, when students participated in various outdoor activities with their houses for a chance to win the “Gator Day Cup.” It is a day filled with competitive spirit, house pride, and, most importantly, FUN!

Monday, June 8 – Grade 6 Celebration (4:00 pm – 5:30 pm – JS Gym) 

• This event is in honour of our Grade 6 students, and marks the end of their time at the Junior School, before “Crossing the Bridge” to Grade 7.
• Grade 6 students and their families are invited.

Junior School Closing Ceremony – Wednesday, June 10 (2:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Brenda Robson Hall)

• This is a special time for us to come together, one last time in celebration of our year of learning and friendship. Students are asked to come to school, at the regular time, and in their #1 Dress. We will end our day together in song, and reflection.

Last Day of School – Thursday, June 11 (Early Staggered Dismissal)

• Students will attend school for a half day, during which they will have the opportunity to say goodbye to their teachers and classmates. End-of-year certificates will be handed out on this day, and we will take pictures to send to families.

Clearing out the Lost & Found – Last Chance to Reclaim Items is Friday, May 5

Thank you to our Grade 5 helpers who are working with Ms. Lulu to reunite labelled items to their rightful owners. 

All unlabelled items will be on display in the Arts/STEM hallway all of next week. Families, caregivers, and students are encouraged to check for lost belongings before the summer. 

Unclaimed items will be donated to next year’s Used Uniform Sale, or brought to New Circles.

Used Textbook Intake

Used Textbook intake is on Wednesday, June 10, 8:00 – 11:30 am in the EK Library.

Please only return textbooks that were used from 2021 to 2026, and that are in reasonable condition, with no watermarks, excessive writing, stains or missing pages—the spine must be intact.

All proceeds from the sale of used books go towards the HCPA and Ahead of the Game Campaign.

Dear Junior School Families,

What a week it was in the Junior School! From track meets and softball games to students attending the Forest of Reading Festival, participating in House Shout, and celebrating the incredible learning that has happened with Artist in Residence Doug Goodkin, this week has been nothing short of joyful. 

We are now in the final stretch of the year, and there is still so much to learn, to be grateful for! I hope that this long weekend gives people an opportunity to pause and reflect as we head into the final stretch of the year. We still have so much to learn, to celebrate and to be grateful for.

The Middle School Presents a Mini Play: “Alices In Wonderland” – Friday, May 22 at 4:30 pm or 6:00 pm

Junior School students and their families are warmly invited to watch our Middle School’s Production “Alices In Wonderland – A Mini Play” To help you prepare for this whimsical adventure, we’ve put together a quick guide for our community.

When is the show?

Mark your calendars for May 22! We are offering two showtimes to accommodate everyone:

• Early Show: 4:30 pm
• Late Show: 6:00 pm

Where is it being held?

• The performance will take place at the Biowall in the Upper School.

How long is the play?

• The show runs for approximately 40 minutes—perfect for our younger audience members!

Tickets & Reservations

Do I need a ticket?

Yes. While there is no cost to attend, tickets must be reserved in advance to ensure we have enough space for everyone.

How do I sign up?

Reservations are easy! Just log into the Parent Portal and click on the HC Box Office link.

North York Harvest Food Bank Drive

Starting Tuesday, May 19, the Junior School will be collecting donations (boxes will be placed outside the JS Library) for our community partner, North York Harvest Food Bank.

Our food drive will run from May 19–22, and we will be collecting the following non-perishable items:

• Pasta
• Pasta sauce
• Canned meat

It is that time of year again! We are looking for submissions for next year’s  agenda covers.

When are the covers due?

• Tuesday, May 19, by 8 am. Covers submitted after this wil not be considered.

Where do students drop off their submissions?

• Cover submissions should be handed to the Art Teacher, Ms. Barrett, or put in the mailbox outside the Art Room

What Should Students Be Asking Themselves Before Starting Their Cover?

• Where do I feel most at home or comfortable at Havergal?

What must be included on the Cover submission?

• The title: “Havergal College Junior School Agenda” 
• The academic year “2026-2027”
• The student’s name and current grade

What is the Orientation of the Paper?

• Covers must be in PORTRAIT orientation on 81/2 x 11″ paper

Can students use Technology for their Submission?

• No. All submissions must be completed by hand. We encourage students to use lots of colour and creativity!
• Tracing or AI enhancements may not be used.

Are Group Submissions Allowed?

• Yes! Just be sure to include everyone’s names and current grades.

Returning Library Books

The library has been a flurry of activity this year, with thousands of books shared amongst our community. As the school year draws to a close, it is time for these library materials to be returned to their home base for inventory and repairs. 

All library books must be returned by May 31st. Please note that students will be allowed to borrow books for the summer during their final library visit of the year (between Jun 1st -8th), but they must have an account cleared of all school-year loans. 

A gentle reminder that any school-year books not returned by the end of the school year will be subject to a replacement fine. Please see the library’s borrowing policy here.

Dear Junior School Families,

It has been a colourful and joyous time in the Junior School, as we celebrated Pride Week and enjoyed an incredible performance by our Grade 6s, under the direction of Dr. Kofi Gbolonyo, one of our artists in residence.

This week truly highlighted how the Havergal community celebrates inclusion, demonstrates curiosity, and acts from a place of kindness and respect.

Finally, a huge thank you to all of the organizers and participants of last weekend’s A-Mazing Race! Just another event highlighting the Junior School community’s incredible spirit.

House Shout Information – Wednesday, May 13

House Shout it next week! This is an annual whole school event (JK to 12) where students come together to showcase their house pride and engage in a little friendly competition. A huge thank you to our Grade 6 leaders and our Junior School Prefects for writing House Cheers and leading House spirit this year.

Here is everything you need to know:

• This is a House Dress-Down Day! Everyone where everyone is invited to put their house pride on full display!

• 8:25 am – 8:55 am – JS House Cheer Assembly
  • Each JS House will share the cheers they have been working on all year, and will be judged by our esteemed judges from the Upper School, who will evaluate cheers based on spirit, teamwork and energy!

• 1:40 pm – 3:00 pm
  • Junior School Students will head over to the Ratcliffe Field, by House, join the Upper School, and see the Upper School Cheers.

Gator Care – Request for Donations for Dramatic Play

We’re looking to introduce a dramatic play center in Gator Care and would appreciate your help. If you have any gently used costumes, accessories, or fun dress-up items that your child has outgrown, please consider donating them. Things like hats, scarves, superhero outfits, princess dresses, or even simple props are all welcome. Please bring donations to the Gator Care Room.

Donations can be sent at any time over the next couple of weeks. Thank you for helping us spark creativity and imaginative play in the classroom!

REMINDERS

Returning Library Books

The library has been a flurry of activity this year, with thousands of books shared amongst our community. As the school year draws to a close, it is time to return these library materials to their home base for inventory and repairs. 

All library books must be returned by May 31st. Please note that students will be allowed to borrow books for the summer during their final library visit of the year (between Jun 1st -8th), but they must have an account cleared of all school-year loans. 

A gentle reminder that any school-year books not returned by the end of the school year will be subject to a replacement fine. Please see the library’s borrowing policy here.

Dear Junior School Families,

Happy May 1! 

This week in Prayers, we had the opportunity to really think about the idea of “inclusive curiosity.” On Monday, Ms. Watt and Ms. Cozier (Executive Director of Inclusive Excellence), and shared the book What Happened To You? by James Catchpole, illustrated by Karen George. It is a story, told from the perspective of a child with a physical disability, and who is tired of all of the intrusive questions people ask him about why he only has one leg. 

The book highlights that while it is natural to be curious when they see something that is different to them, this curiosity should always be balanced with empathy and respect, for how it might make someone feel to constantly be asked about it.

This message was further strengthened on Wednesday, when we welcomed teachers from the Bloorview School Authority, and former Grade 5 students who are now in Grade 9. They shared the story of how Havergal students worked collaboratively to develop “arcade games” that would be accessible for the Bloorview students to play.  This project served as a powerful reminder that inclusion is not a one-way street of “helping,” but a rich opportunity to learn from others. We thrilled to be collaborating with Bloorview School Authority again this year!

Announcing Our New Board Chair

We are pleased to announce that Kate Horton ‘94 will be appointed as the new Chair of the Board of Governors this September. An alumna and current parent, Kate is the President and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Canada. Her extensive experience in strategic leadership and her deep connection to the school will be invaluable as she guides Havergal’s long-term vision and sustainability.

We also share our deepest gratitude for outgoing Chair Jill Fraser ‘87. During her tenure, Jill was instrumental in launching the Empowering Excellence strategic plan, laying the groundwork for a substantial expansion of our outdoor athletic and play facilities, including a new Junior School playscape, refurbished tennis courts, lower pitch revitalization and preparations for a new turf field and seasonal dome. Her dedication to advancing girls’ education and athletics has left a lasting impact on our community. To ensure a seamless leadership transition and maintain governance continuity, Jill will serve as Past Chair for the coming year, providing strategic support to Kate in her new role.

As we look toward the fall, we are excited to build on this momentum. Kate will officially assume her role following the Annual General Meeting on September 21, and you can look forward to her first formal community message in the October edition of Inside Havergal.

Pride Week: May 4 – May 8 (Schedule)

Pride is the time – let your light shine.

As a school, Havergal is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where every student feels safe, seen, and valued throughout the entire year. Our inclusive practices are woven into our curriculum, school events, and classroom discussions to ensure that all children and families – regardless of background, identity of ability – are celebrated and respected. During Pride Week, we take time to specifically recognize and honour the experiences and contributions of LGBTQ2S+ individuals. This is an important opportunity to help our students practice kindness and empathy and build a strong sense of community. By highlighting these important issues, we aim to foster an environment where all students can thrive, feel proud of who they are, and know that they belong.

We invite you to explore some of these resources for your own learning ahead of next, and may help you engage in conversation with your daughter, should she have questions.

Here is a schedule of activities planned for the week:

Monday

• 8:25 am – 8:55 am (JK – Grade 6)
  • JS Pride Prayers (JS Gym)
    • Students will be introduced to this year’s Pride Week Theme – Pride is the Time to Let Your Light Shine! We will share how there is a special light inside each of us that makes us uniquely ourselves, and to encourage people to be proud of who they are, and who they love. Students will then also learn about the history of the Pride Flag, and start to learn what it means to be an ally.
• 9:00-10:00am – Grade 6
  • Students will participate in an engaging workshop that introduces identity, including 2SLGBTQ+ identities, in an age-appropriate way, which is aligned with the Grade 6 Ontario Curriculum, and shows students how they can be an ally, and make a difference at any age. Havergal has been thrilled to work in collaboration with team members from the The Get REAL Movement to plan and run this workshop.
• 10:25 am – 11:25 am – Grade 4 & 5
  • Students will participate in a similar workshop as the Grade 6s, that is aligned with the Grade 4 & 5 curriculum.

Tuesday

• 10:00 am – 10:25 am (Grade 1 – 6 Drop-in)
  • Students will participate in a Pride Week “Kahoot Trivia” game, where they will be asked questions about what the colours on the Progress Flag represent, who invented the Pride flag, and what are some of the ways that you can be an ally. 
• 2:30 pm – 3:05 pm (Grade 1 – 3); 2:30 pm – 3:15 pm (Grades 4 – 6)
  • Students will make poster boards for our Pride Week Parade on Friday, with messages of inclusion and support.

Wednesday

• 11:30 am – 12:00 pm (Grades 4 – 6 OPTIONAL); 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm (Grades 1 – 3 Drop-in)
  • Students will make rainbow suncatcher charms during lunch recess.

Thursday

• 9:00 am – 10:00 am (Grade 1 – 3)
  • Students will engage in a Virtual Visit with Sarah Weed, author of Getting Glam at Gram’s. This is a warm and loving book that champions diversity, gender expression, and learning to love yourself.
  • Ms. Weed will do a read aloud for 30 mins, and then students will participate in a 30 min activity.

Friday

• Dress-Down Day (JK – Grade 6)
  • Students will have the option of dressing brightly in any of the colours of the rainbow to show their PRIDE, OR ,in honour of the Toronto Tempo’s first ever home opener – wear colours, teams that represent WOMEN IN SPORT (e.g., Toronto Temple Jersey, Havergal Gators Athletic Wear…)
• 10:00 am – 10:25 am
  • Karaoke Dance Pary (Gr 1 – 6; OPTIONAL)

The GLOW pop-up shop is a special event in May that provides high school students the opportunity to “shop” for formal attire at no cost. This initiative is done with our community partners at New CIrcles, and is an opportunity to  support, promote inclusivity, and

 ensure that every student has the chance to enjoy a memorable prom night.

Dear Junior School Families,

Spring is finally blooming on campus, and it was the perfect backdrop for Earth Week. A huge thank you to our Grade 4 leaders for organizing such meaningful experiences and empowering us to protect our planet.

Yesterday, we also gathered at St. Paul’s Bloor Street to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Founders’ Day. Reflecting on a century of history, we considered how much the student experience has evolved—from horse and buggy to carpools, and from library stacks to instant digital information.

Yet, while our classrooms and technologies change, our core values remain steadfast. Just like the cornerstone laid on April 23, 1926, our mission continues to be the foundation of the Havergal experience.

Havergal is excited to once again be celebrating Pride Week from Monday May 4 – Friday, May 8.

As a school, Havergal is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where every student feels safe, seen, and valued throughout the entire year. Our inclusive practices are woven into our curriculum, school events, and classroom discussions to ensure that all children and families – regardless of background, identity of ability – are celebrated and respected. We look forward to sharing the activities that have been planned, at a variety of age levels, and resources for families wishing to carry on the discussion at home with you next week. 

School Busing Interest Survey for Families 

We are always looking for ways to better support our families’ daily routines. With that in mind, we are investigating the possibility of launching a private Havergal busing service. Whether this looks like centralized pick-up points or door-to-door service, we need your input to move forward. Your feedback will help us understand if there is enough collective interest and long-term commitment to make this program a reality.

Welcome Back to Artist in Residence – Doug Goodin: Tuesday, April 28th – Thursday, May 14th

We look forward to welcoming Doug Goodkin to the Junior School from Tuesday, April 28th – Thursday, May 14th to work with a variety of our students during their regular Music and Integrated Arts classes.

Doug Goodkin is a globally acclaimed Orff Schulwerk educator, teaching music education courses in over 50 countries. For 45 years, he inspired young minds at The San Francisco School and now serves as a dedicated consultant, mentor, guest teacher, workshop leader, and performer in schools, both near and far.

Doug is also the director of the San Francisco International Orff Course, the founder of the Jazz/ Orff Course, Doug Goodkin & the Pentatonics Jazz Band, Pentatonic Press, the SF School Intern Program and a frequent guest teacher at The Orff Institute in Salzburg and in the Orff-Afrique Course in Ghana.

Doug is a prolific author with ten published books and has left an indelible mark as a featured personality in the documentary film, ‘The Secret Song.’ His passion for music education and his extensive reach in nurturing the next generation of learners are the hallmarks of his illustrious career.

As part of our commitment to service, community partnership, and global citizenship, the Junior School is proud to launch the upcoming GLOW Drive in support of one of our community partners, New Circles. 

From April 27 to May 1, we will be collecting gently used prom and formalwear for the New Circles Prom Pop-Up Shop, a special event in May that provides high school students the opportunity to “shop” for formal attire at no cost. The goal is to offer support, promote inclusivity, and ensure that every student has the chance to enjoy a memorable prom night. 

This initiative also connects meaningfully to our upcoming Earth Week, encouraging sustainability by giving beautiful items a second life. 

We invite all members of our community to contribute (for all genders): 

• Prom attire (dresses, suits) 
• Dress shoes (heels, flats, dress shoes) 
• Accessories (purses, belts, costume jewelry) 

Donations can be placed in the bins and on the hanging racks located outside the JS Library.

Dear Junior School Families,

It was such a pleasure to welcome so many families to Student-Led Conferences today! Our students were absolutely beaming as they shared their learning in homeroom and specialist classes. One of the things that I noted, no matter which class I visited, was how confidently our students were able to talk about the process of their learning, and not just the final product. 

At their heart, student-led conferences are a masterclass in leadership and self-awareness. By stepping into the role of facilitator, our girls develop much more than just public speaking skills; they practice metacognition, learning to reflect deeply on how they think and solve problems. This process builds a profound sense of agency and accountability, as students take full ownership of their goals and learn to advocate for their own learning needs with confidence. Ultimately, these conversations foster the relational intelligence and poise necessary for our girls to navigate the world as self-assured leaders who aren’t just reciting facts, but are actively shaping their own futures. We hope you enjoyed today, as much as they did!

For families with daughters in JK and SK, we hope that your Parent-Teacher Interviews were productive, and gave you an opportunity to learn more about their progress this year!

This week we also had the opportunity to celebrate “The Arts” in the Junior School. This week served to highlight how our students use the arts help us to celebrate our identities and cultures, learn about others, grow, feel safe and seen, express and explore our feelings, and make the world a beautiful place.

A HUGE note of thanks to our incredible faculty and staff for all of their work, not only preparing for Arts’ Week and Student-Led Conferences, but for all they do each day to make the Junior School so special.

“Dori” The Therapy Dog is Coming to the Junior School!

We are excited to share that Ms. Kelly, Head of Library, will be bringing her therapy dog, Dori, to the library to visit with students in the coming weeks.

Dori is a  certified therapy dog who has spent many days on campus at the upper school this year. We are thrilled to be able to include the Junior School in this endeavour.

Dori will be visiting with classes during their regularly scheduled library class. She will be in a quiet area, and students will be able to read with Dori in pairs or groups of 3 for a few moments at a time. 

If you would not like your child to participate for any reason, please let me know so we can make alternate arrangements. Here are the dates that Dori will be with each class:

Information Re: Founders’ Day: Thursday, April 23 (Grade 1 – 12)

This year, on Founder’s Day, we are celebrating 100 years (!) since the placement of the cornerstone at 1451 Avenue Rd. Students in Grade 1 – 12 will be celebrating this moment on Thursday, April 23 at St. Paul Bloor Street. 

Please read the following information carefully, to ensure your daughter is here on time for her bus’ departure. Students in JK and SK will remain at school.

JS Bus Departure Schedule:

• 8:00 am
  • All students in the Junior Choir and the Steel Pan Drumming depart from Havergal College to St. Paul’s. Please arrive no later than 7:45 am
• 8:30 am

Dear Junior School Families,

Today was another incredible special day, where we welcomed just over 400 grandpals to the school! The students were beyond excited to welcome them, and the pride that they have in their learning, and their community was palpable. We certainly hope that the grandpals had as much fun as we did. Today was also a great opportunity for our students to practice just some of what they will share with you next Friday, April 17, when we welcome families for Student-Led Conferences.

• Get ready for Monochromatic Thursday during Arts Week!

Mix light and dark versions of your colour to create a monochromatic masterpiece. It’s a fun way to show off your artistic style and celebrate colour!

Student-Led Conferences: Everything You Need to Know for Friday, April 17  (Grade 1 – 6)

We are very much looking forward to welcoming families on Friday, April 17 for Student-Led Conferences. This will be an opportunity for you to see what students are currently learning in the classroom, and to provide and opportunity for them to present their progress to you formally. Rather than showing you a final product, students will focus on the learning process and self-reflection. 

Please note:

• There are no classes on this day, for students (JK – Grade 6). 
• If you have more than one daughter, one is welcome to go to Gator Care, while the other is presenting.
• Students should dress in their regular Havergal uniform when coming into the Junior School for their conference.

Spring Uniform Check

As we head into the final term, we’ve noticed many of our students have had significant growth spurts! Please take a moment to check that your daughter’s kilt sits no more than 9 cm above the knee. If a new size is needed, we highly encourage you to visit the HCPA Used Uniform Sale on April 21st.  Finally, patent or platform shoes are not permitted; we ask that they be replaced.

Dear Junior School Families,

It has been an incredibly vibrant and enriching time in the Junior School since our return from March Break. One of the greatest privileges of being part of this community is the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment that so warmly celebrates such a beautiful tapestry of cultures and traditions. By sharing these experiences, our students gain more than just knowledge—they develop a deeper sense of empathy and a global perspective that is truly wonderful to witness. Last week we learned about Ramadan and Eid, and this week we celebrated Nowruz, and Easter. We are very much looking forward to next week when we will be honouring Passover.

Grandpals’ Day – Need to Know Information

We are excited to welcome our Grandpals next Friday, April 10!

9:30 am – 10:00 am

• Grandpals arrive, sign in, attend a reception and enjoy some refreshments in the JS Gym.
• Please do not arrive earlier than 9:30 am, as this will disrupt our drop-off procedures.

10:00 am – 10:15 am

• Welcome and Address from Dr. Katrina Samson (Principal) and Ms. Kate White (Head of Junior School)

10:15 am – 11:15 am

• Grandpals will be picked up from the gym by teachers and guided to the appropriate classrooms. Once there, their granddaughters will give them a tour of their classroom and share their learning. For Grandpals with more than one granddaughter, please go to the younger student’s classroom first.

Please also note the following important information:

• Due to space, this event is intended for “Grandpals” only (e.g., a grandparent, aunt, uncle, family friend). For parents who are dropping off their “Grandpal” we ask that you return at the end of the event, and not go visit the classrooms. Alternatively, you are welcome to go to the JS Dining Hall, where there will be tea, coffee and water available.
• If your daughter does not have a “Grandpal” who is able to attend, please let her homeroom teacher know, so that she can participate in alternative programming during this time.
• Should a grandpal have any mobility issue, we will have people on hand to provide support.
• Parking is EXTREMELY limited at the Junior School. If at all possible, grandpals are encouraged to walk, take public transportation, or a taxi. Dear Junior School Families,

It was so lovely to welcome our students back to school on Tuesday after the March Break! The halls are buzzing once again with the sounds of our students learning and playing together; always a delight to see!

On Monday, our faculty and staff welcomed educational consultant, Eric Hudson to campus for a professional development day on the future of generative AI in education. Eric guided us through AI skills and tools in the morning session, with a deep dive in the afternoon focused on assessment strategies and the future of writing.  

Through hands-on learning, practical examples and Q & As, Eric discussed what it means to be a human in an AI world, emphasized the importance of thoughtful integration and shared three AI skills for educators and students: literacy, learning, and ethics. We are excited to bring these insights to our work and classrooms! 

To our families celebrating Passover next week, we hope it is a lovely time with family and friends. Chag Sameach!

Information About Founders’ Day: Thursday, April 23 (Grade 1 – 12)

This year’s Founders’ Day celebration will be held at 9:45 am on Thursday April 23 at St. Paul’s Bloor Street church (227 Bloor Street East) – Havergal’s original parish church. 

A part of the Founders’ Day tradition includes hearing the Junior School (Grades 1-6), Middle School, and Senior Choirs perform. As always, the Graduating Class has a special role to play at Founders’ Day. The Class of 2026 will process into the church wearing Marguerite Pins – a gift of the Havergal Old Girls Association (HOGA). The Marguerite Pin symbolises a graduating student’s passage into the Old Girls/Alums network of over 9,500 members.

Founders’ Day is a birthday, of sorts, that builds community – our community. It’s a longstanding tradition in the life of Havergal that brings together students and faculty from both the Junior and Upper Schools alike. It marks the anniversary of the cornerstone being laid at the “New School” on Avenue Road in 1926. 

Welcome Back to Artist in Residence – Dr. Kofi Gbolonyo!

We are thrilled to be welcoming Dr. Kofi back on Monday, April 13th. He will be working with a variety of our students across the Junior School during Prayers & their regular Music and Integrated Arts classes. 

Grade 6 students will have a showcase of their learning on Wednesday, May 6th during Prayers to conclude Kofi’s residency. As always, parents are warmly invited to attend Prayers.

Kofi Gbolonyo is a scholar, educator, and performer whose primary research, expertise, and educational interests are in West African traditional music and dance, Ewe indigenous knowledge, language and culture, Orff-Schulwerk pedagogy, multicultural music education, Ghanaian brass band and choral music. His scholarship focuses on indigenous knowledge and cultural values in the musical practices of the Ewe and Fon of West Africa. He is currently a professor at Capilano University and The University of British Columbia.
