Message from the Head of Junior School: October 5, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

Joy and gratitude filled the Brenda Robson Hall this morning, as we welcomed in the Thanksgiving weekend.    The girls, under the fabulous direction of Mr. Jeff MacLean and Ms. Rachel Read, sang so beautifully, and Mrs. Davy’s retelling of the story of  “Stone Soup” allowed us to reflect not only of our many blessings but on the importance of sharing the bounty.  We are also pleased to let you know that our community was able to collect 1445 pounds of food for the North York Harvest Food Bank. Thank you for your generosity.

On Tuesday, I am excited to welcome families to “Coffee with Kate” at 8:30 am in the Learning Hub.  At this time, I will share some of the ways in which we promote a positive school culture in the Junior School.

On behalf of all of the staff and faculty of the Junior School, we wish you a restful and happy Thanksgiving weekend.

Sincerely,
Kate White

Message from the Head of Junior School: September 28, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

I write today in disbelief that this my last blog post of September!  This month we have already experienced: the first day of school, People and Program Night, 11 prayers, our first Day 9, Athletic tryouts, Squad, Squad Team and Team Practices, and the first week of clubs, to say nothing of the start of academic learning in all subject areas.  As you look back on this time, we invite you to share any feedback on the opening weeks, so that we can thoughtfully reflect on what has gone well as well as what we should consider moving forward.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Ms. Irene Dongas to the Havergal Junior School Community.  Ms. Dongas is joining our Gator Care program as a supervisor, as well as our list of regular supply teachers.  She received her Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto in 2008, and has experience in both the Toronto District School Board and in Independent Schools.  Ms. Dongas brings to the school a love of learning, an understanding of the varied needs of students, and a deep belief in the importance of creating a safe and nurturing environment for all children.

We look forward to seeing you at Celebration Saturday!

Sincerely,
Kate White

Day 9: Wednesday, September 26

This past Wednesday was Havergal’s first Day 9 of the year. Whether it was our Junior and Senior Kindergarten students getting up close and personal with Pawsitively Pets, or our Grade 11s doing an Amazing Race throughout the city, it was an overwhelming success. Our students and faculty took advantage of the time and space to push themselves further, challenge themselves more, and think critically about some of the key issues facing our city, our country and ourselves. There is no doubt that our students are feeling more spirited about their grade after these shared experiences.
We would like to thank our parents for their cooperation, our faculty for their support in getting this Day 9 launched successfully, and to our students who engaged so highly throughout their experience.
Please be sure to check out our Instagram and Twitter feeds for some great photos that reflect the breadth and depth of our Day 9 Programming. If you are interested in becoming a part of our Day 9 programming or have some possible ideas, please contact Garth Nichols (gnichols@havergal.on.ca), VP Student Engagement and Experiential Learning.

Athletics

Thank you to all student-athletes for their participation in tryouts for the fall season. Our athletic program has the breadth to meet the needs of a diverse group of students, and the depth to challenge students at all stages of development. It also develops in all students: self-confidence, sportsmanship, commitment, perseverance, co-operation, responsibility, resilience, self-efficacy and pride in representing the school.

The Junior School is proud to have squads, squad teams and teams to support this philosophy.  We encourage those athletes who are not playing on the team of their choice to seek out their coach and find specific ways they can develop their skill.

Squads and Squad Teams start their practices this week. They will continue practicing once a week until Nov. 23rd.

We will be running practices on Wednesday, Sept 26th a ‘Day 9’.

Lice Squad – Tuesday, September 25

Communication and education about head lice with students and parents/guardians is essential for fostering a relationship of trust and respect in dealing with the issue. As such, we have arranged for the Lice Squad to come to the Junior School on Tuesday, September 25.  While the treatment of head lice is ultimately the parent/guardian’s responsibility it is our hope that through open and honest dialogue, the school and parents can work together to reduce the transmission of lice between individuals while maintaining the dignity of those affected by this nuisance.

Message from the Head of Junior School: September 14, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

Last week at prayers, we asked the girls to reflect on the 2017-2018 school year, and to ask themselves the following questions:

  • What went well?
  • What made you proud?
  • What was challenging?
  • What would you do differently now?

We then asked them to use this information to think about what they hope and dream about for the 2018-2019 school.  Students identified things such as “making new friends,” “getting on a team,” “trying something new,” “being a better writer,” “working hard in math” and “being the best I can be” as part of this list.

This morning in prayers, we then noted that each class from JK to Grade 6 has been discussing what respect looks, sounds and feels like at the Junior School, and what it means to be a Havergal student.  We talked about how it is one thing to know what respect is, and it is another to choose to be respectful.  Each student was then invited to think about how they will use respectful words and actions this year so that we can collectively accomplish our hopes and dreams. I invite you to talk about this with your daughter over the weekend and find out how she will choose to speak and act with respect this year.

Sincerely,
Kate White

Message from the Head of Junior School: September 7, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

Thank you all for such a successful first week of school!  It has been a pleasure to see all of our new and returning HC Junior School students skipping through the halls, re-establishing previous friendships, and making new connections.  On behalf of all of our faculty and staff, we appreciate your taking the time to come to our People and Program Night earlier this week.  It was a wonderful opportunity for us to share our vision for the upcoming year, celebrate our many successes as a Junior School, and communicate our goals for the future.  We are excited to start what we know will be an exceptional year.

Sincerely,
Kate White

Safety Reminder – Accessing the Junior School from Cohen Field

We would like to remind parents to please use the pedestrian pathway from the Cohen Field parking lot – which runs adjacent to the ravine – in order to access the Junior School. Pedestrians are not permitted to exit Cohen Field via the entrance to Rosewell Avenue, in order to gain access to the Junior School driveway. It is not safe to do so, due to traffic entering and exiting Cohen Field, traffic on Rosewell Avenue and traffic entering the main driveway.

Safety signage has been posted and we ask that you abide by these signs and be mindful of your surroundings when using the lot.

Please click the links below to view a map of Cohen Field, the pedestrian pathway and the recommended procedures.

Permission to walk home

If you want your daughter to leave the school and walk home or take public transit by herself on a regular basis, we must have written permission. You are welcome to send an email to jsoffice@havergal.on.ca describing permission/walk home arrangements.

We must also have written permission if your child takes a school bus that you have arranged through an outside vendor. Understandably, on occasion, there are special circumstances whereby you may not be able to collect your daughter and, on short notice, you would like for her to walk home. In these one-off situations, your daughter is required to sign-out in the Main Office before leaving campus.

Do you think you read more than the librarian?

A reminder that the summer reading challenge logs need to be handed in by Friday, September 14th! Extra sheets are available in the library if you need them. Make sure you hand them in – students who have read more than Ms. Rodd will win “Book Fair Bucks.” There is also a class prize for the class with the highest number of participants.

2018 Summer Reading Challenge

Can You Read More than the Librarian?

The Summer Reading Challenge is back! Reading over the summer is crucial for your daughter to maintain the progress she has worked so hard to achieve this year. We’ve created a challenge to help keep her motivated and reading during the long summer days.

Ms. Rodd is always looking for books to recommend, which means she is also always reading! We are challenging the girls to take on Ms. Rodd and see if they can read more than her. Updates regarding Ms. Rodd’s progress will be posted on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and you are encouraged to send in pictures of your daughter working to read more than Ms. Rodd!

Facebook: Direct message to Havergal http://facebook.com/HavergalCollege
lnstagram: Direct message to Havergal http://instagram.com/HavergalCollege
Email: ntulli@havergal.on.ca or lpiltz@havergal.on.ca

Your daughter will be coming home with a hard copy of the summer reading list for her grade – here are links to each of the lists:

Summer Reading JK to Grade 1: http://bit.ly/HC_SummerReading2018_JKGr1
Summer Reading Grades 2 and 3: http://bit.ly/HC_SummerReading2018_Gr23
Summer Reading Grades 4-6: http://bit.ly/HC_SummerReading2018_Gr456

Your daughter is bringing home a tracking form. You can also find a copy here:

All kinds of reading materials count, as well as stories read to our younger readers. A title can only be listed once.

Students who return their forms in September will be eligible to win individual prizes for reading more than the librarian, as well as class prizes for participation.

Happy reading everyone!

An Update on the New Build

We have received additional building permits from the City of Toronto and are looking forward to continuing construction work at the Junior School and the Upper School.

Once the school year ends, we are planning to begin demolition at both sites in order to make space for our exciting new facilities. From now until year end, the Buttcon construction team will be undertaking quiet work in preparation for the next phase of the build. At the Junior School, Buttcon will be working on the former Kindergarten and music spaces, located inside the construction zone. During the summer months, we anticipate the bulk of demolition and foundation work to take place.

We ask that you continue to keep safety in mind when visiting Havergal, by obeying signage and avoiding entering construction zones. We will share another update with you before the start of the new 2018-2019 school year!
