Message from the Head of Junior School: December 14th, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

As you know, report cards were published on Veracross this past Wednesday.
Should you have any questions please reach out to the appropriate teacher who will be happy to speak with you.

This afternoon, shortly after the blog is sent out, our Kindergarten students will be hitting the stage with their Christmas Concert.  This is always a highlight of the year, and will be enjoyed by all. Photos and videos will be available on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram later today.

We also look forward to welcoming you to the Brenda Robson Hall on Tuesday, December 18th at 4:00 p.m. for the Grade 1 – 6 Concert. The students had a rehearsal this morning as part of prayers, and are sounding magical.

Sincerely,
Kate White

Beyond the Ivy Walls

Our Havergal Junior School students pursue a vast array of activities beyond our walls. Their dedication and accomplishments are impressive, and we want to give students the opportunity to share their efforts with our community. Highlighting and celebrating our girls’ learning beyond our ivy walls not only allows us to get to know each other in different ways, but it may also serve as inspiration for others.

Accomplishments in any field are welcome: athletics, arts, academics, philanthropy, hobbies and more. Endeavours that represent the Havergal values of integrity, inquiry, compassion and/or courage are also encouraged.

How to submit:

If your daughter has an accomplishment from beyond the ivy walls that she would like to share, either you or your daughter may submit the accomplishment by email to Ms. Szolopiak sszolopiak@havergal.on.ca. Please use the subject line: Beyond The Ivy Walls, include 3 – 4 sentences describing the accomplishment,  as well as a good quality photo.

When to submit:

Submissions can be made at any time. Pictures and descriptions will be posted on the “Beyond The Ivy Walls” bulletin board outside of the Junior School gymnasium. Once a month, students will be recognized in Prayers so our community can celebrate their acts of excellence and perhaps be inspired to try something new or do something great beyond the ivy walls of Havergal College Junior School.

Wacky Festive Sweater Day on Monday (Can-Struction Fundraiser)!

Thank you so much for all of your donations to the Christmas food drive and to the Gr. 5 Can-struction Project.

Thank you and happy wacky Christmas sweater Monday!

Message from the Head of Junior School: November 23rd, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

As is often the case, we have been using prayers as an opportunity to share important messages with our community.  This week, Ms. Watt has been focusing on the importance of “choosing to be kind.”  First, she shared a powerful picture book entitled “Be Kind” by Pat Zietlow Miller.  The story explores what it means to be kind, from asking someone to play, to standing up for someone being bullied. It invites the reader to think about how any act, big or small, can make a difference.  In addition, Ms. Watt shared a video that addressed how one act of kindness, can lead to many others.  Finally, the poetry of our Grade 4 students, was highlighted as they have been exploring this topic in class as well. As part of this conversation,  we also investigated how conversely,  one unkind word or action can leave a mark on someone not just in the moment, but for years to come. Our message is, was, and will continue to be “choose kind.”

Sincerely,
Kate White

As in previous years, we will be collecting gently used outdoor winter gear (coats, snowpants, boots, hats, mitts, etc…)  for New Circles , a long-time Havergal Community Partnership.  Drop-off bins will be placed in front of the Learning Hub.

In addition, as part of our Day 9 initiative, students in Grade 5 have been learning about the food needs of people in our community, with an organization called the  “Canstruction Design Challenge.”  To learn more about the work that they have been doing: CLICK HERE

The Grade 5 students would like to involve our community in their work with the “Bring a Can to School Day” initiative.

  • Each student (and faculty/staff member) is asked to bring in a can of food with a label that is coloured primarily green, (if other colours they will be used as “ornaments”).
  • Each class will then use the cans to construct a “Christmas Tree” to raise awareness around the need for food banks in our city.  The cans will then be donated to the North York Community Food Bank, another long time community partnership.
  • The Grade 5s will be explaining their work to the Junior School students at an upcoming prayers, so they have an understanding of what this initiative is all about.
  • We ask that all cans are brought in to school by December 14.

Message from the Head of Junior School: November 16th, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

It was so lovely to see our students return after the mid-term break, refreshed and ready to continue learning. With just five weeks to go until the winter break, we are continuing to reinforce the importance of our school norms, as well what it means to be a member of the Havergal Community.

Sincerely,
Kate White

In this message, read about:

Healthy Snacks

With Halloween now behind us, a reminder that in order to reinforce good nutrition and ensure that children maintain a high energy level throughout the day, candy and soft drinks are not permitted in school. A high-energy snack such as fruit, cheese, crackers, yogurt and granola bars may be brought from home to be eaten at recess.

Outdoor Play

With the first snowfall of the season, please ensure that your daughter has all the appropriate outdoor gear, so that she can fully engage in outdoor play at recess.  It is also recommended that she keep an extra pair of socks or tights in her bag, in the event she gets wet while outside.

Havergal’s 125th Anniversary

In 2019 Havergal will mark a significant milestone: our 125th anniversary. We will commemorate the occasion with a special performance to celebrate Havergal’s 125 years of academic excellence.

We invite you to join us on Friday, May 3, 2019 at Roy Thomson Hall at 7 pm for Past, Present, Future, an evening of dance, drama and musical performances.

Tickets for this evening occasion will be released in mid-January 2019 and we will share additional details with you in the coming months. Please note that this performance will replace our spring music concerts for this year and will be mandatory for students in Grades 4 to 12. Similar to Carol Service, students will be seated with their peers and teachers in their Houses. We are excited to embark on this journey together and the year of celebrations to come!

Junior School Build

The foundational work for our new facilities at the Junior School is nearly complete and we will be moving onto the next phase of constructionstructural workvery soon. During this phase of the build, structural steel will at arriving to the work site and assembly for the new buildings will begin.

You may see cranes and steel beams inside the construction site once this work commences. As always, all work will take place inside the construction zone, however, some construction may be visible at times from the Junior School driveway due to the nature of the work.

In planning this project, we have established the necessary construction protocols with student safety at the forefront. Overhead protection has been installed to provide an additional safety barrier near the driveway and walkway, as safety remains our number one priority. To watch this portion of the build take shape, visit our Junior School live feed.

Parking Reminder

While Rosewell Avenue can be very busy during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up periods, we ask that you be mindful of the appropriate parking areas in the neighbourhood. Please take note of the accessible parking spaces in the area and do not use these spaces unless you are an accessible parking permit holder.

These spaces are necessary for citizens with restricted mobility and should not otherwise be used for stopping or parking without a permit.

Parking for Junior School visitors is available at the Cohen Field parking lot, the Upper School parking lot and on nearby side streets in allocated parking zones only. We ask that you please abide by the City of Toronto parking regulations when parking off-site and be a respectful neighbour.

Message from the Head of Junior School: November 2nd, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

It has been another couple of full weeks at Havergal! Between Parent-Teacher Interviews, Halloween, Day 9, Coffee and Conversations, and celebrating Diwali in Prayers this morning, we have very much to be grateful for.  Yesterday, we started the day by talking about the multitude of feelings we can experience during any one day, especially during busy times such as this. We then took a few minutes to engage in a guided meditation to help us to slow our thoughts, concentrate on our breath and reflect on our feelings. These moments are so important, not only because they provide us with a sense of calm, but because they help us to consolidate our learning, as well as acknowledge and enjoy the many blessings in our lives.

Sincerely,
Kate White

Message from the Head of Junior School: October 26, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

It has been such a pleasure to see so many families over the last two days for Parent-Teacher Conferences. These conversations are an opportunity to discuss your daughter’s progress, to see the areas in which she is thriving, and to discuss targeted plans for continued growth. Moreover, they allow us to further strengthen the relationship between home and school.  It is important to remember, however, that while the conferences provide an overview of your daughter’s academic and social-emotional development, ongoing feedback throughout the year is paramount.  Should you ever have questions or concerns, we invite you to contact us and be assured that we will do the same.

As the weather gets colder, please ensure that your daughter brings the proper outdoor clothing (hat, mittens, warm coat, boots etc) for outdoor recesses (morning and afternoon), so that she can enjoy her time outside.

Sincerely,
Kate White

Message from the Head of Junior School: October 19, 2018

Dear Junior School Parents,

We have been speaking to the students about the difference between happiness and joy over the last several weeks.  Yesterday, Ms. Watt shared with us that Happiness brings us instant pleasure but does not always last very long, like eating a chocolate ice cream cone or getting a book you have had your eye on for a long time.  Joy, on the other hand, warms your heart and is a stronger feeling that stays around you for a much longer period of time, like when being in nature-walking through a forest in the fall and seeing the sunshine through the trees or being in the comfort of your own home.  Rev. Douglas added to the discussion this morning, by talking about the ways in which we can grow joy in our day to day lives by taking the time to notice the good, to smile, and to laugh.  We encourage you to talk to your daughter this weekend about what she has learned about the difference between happiness and joy, and how she finds both.

Sincerely,
Kate White
