A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, September 10, 2021

Dear Junior School Parents,

What an absolute pleasure it has been to see your children back at school! Our new and returning students have spent their first day at school developing relationships, building classroom culture, and understanding the rights and responsibilities of being a Havergal student.

We are very much looking forward to the weeks ahead, and settling into classroom routines, and starting our work together as learners and contributing members of the school community. As a reminder, please be sure to reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher, as a first point of contact, with any questions or concerns. Our partnership with you is important, and we value these opportunities to connect.

Wishing you all the best for a happy and healthy weekend ahead.

Sincerely,

Kate

LATEST NEWS

Safe Arrival and Dismissal of Students

A huge note of thanks to our families for remembering to complete the Wellness Check, on SchoolPass, for your child(ren) prior to their arrival at school! This is a critical piece of our health and safety protocols. Each student was provided with a QR code earlier this week that has been attached to their backpack. This enables us to check each child in upon arrival.

Updating Your SchoolPass Account

Please review all of the tips provided in this quick reference guide so that you know how to add drivers and make other changes as necessary; if you need assistance to change who has been designated as “Parent 1”, please email jsoffice@havergal.on.ca to request that we facilitate that change

In order to expedite the arrival and departure of students, we ask the following:

Drop-off  (8:00 am – 8:20 am)

  • Only families with children in JK or SK are permitted to park on school property and accompany them to the JK/SK door. If you have a child in Grades 1 – 6, you are not permitted to park on property during drop-off.
  • If you are driving your child to school, stay in your vehicle. A Havergal employee will be on hand to provide assistance and to walk-in those students that are not yet ready to do so independently.
  • Have your child exit the vehicle on the curbside only, rather than onto the driveway.
  • Have your child’s backpack and school materials in the backseat, and not in the trunk, ready for a quick drop-off.

Pick-Up

  • In order to manage traffic, the JS has a staggered dismissal system.  Please adhere to your child’s dismissal time. If you have children with different dismissal times, please come at the later time.
    • 3:00 pm – JK
    • 3:15 pm – SK
    • 3:25 pm – Grades 1 – 3
    • 3:40 pm – Grades 4 – 6
    • Grade 1 – 6 students can be picked up between their dismissal & 4:00 p.m.

  • Upon arrival at the school, please have your “Carpool Number” ready on the SchoolPass app, so that it can be inputted quickly into our system and your child’s teacher can be alerted to your arrival.
  • Here is a screenshot of where this can be located:

Independent Dismissal for Students in Grades 4 – 6

  • If you plan to pick up your child(ren) by car, and they have been given a green tag indicating they have been registered to leave the school property independently, please collect them from the northern side of Rosewell, across from the school (there is a crosswalk available for students to use), OR from a location a block or two away from Havergal. This will assist us in alleviating congestion on school property.
  • If your would like to grant your child this permission, please register as soon as possible, using the following link: Independent Dismissal Registration

Rapid Testing for the Entire JS Community:

  • An email will be issued from Shemina Ladak, Director Administration Department about the Thrive website; please ensure you reply by Tuesday, September 14 to sladak@havergal.on.ca to clarify which email address you would like the invitation from Thrive to go to. This email will serve as the basis of your Thrive account.
  • If your child has had an infection in the last 90 days, they should not participate. Please contact covid@havergal.on.ca to share your child’s name and/or if you have specific questions about whether or not they are to be included.
  • We are in the process of planning a Webinar for parents to further explain how to complete Rapid testing in conjunction with your Thrive account. Stay tuned!

Athletics and Arts Registration Information

We will be sharing the purpose of the day, in developmentally appropriate ways, with the students on Monday, September 27.
  • Students are invited to wear an orange shirt on this day, on top of their regular HC uniform.

Vaccinations

While students in JK – Grade 6 are not currently eligible for vaccinations, we wanted to be sure to share the message that was included in the US Blog today regarding this:

Vaccination is one of our best tools for protection against COVID-19. We are strongly encouraging all students to get a full series of COVID-19 vaccinations as soon as they are eligible, to help maximize individual and collective safety in our community.

In late-August, instructions will be sent to you regarding how to share your child’s COVID -19 vaccination receipts with the Health Centre. In the meantime, please hold onto these records.

Please note that our vaccination policies are currently being reviewed and may be updated over the summer as we await further direction from Toronto Public Health and the Ministry of Education regarding vaccinations.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School: Friday, June 11, 2021

Dear JS Parents,

As we come to the last full week of the academic year, I wanted to take a moment to say thank you. It has been a year with so many challenges, and I am grateful for your many contributions. I look forward to Monday, when we will wish our Grade 6s well before they cross the bridge and begin Middle School in the fall, and to our Closing Ceremony on Wednesday.

Sadly, this afternoon in prayers, we had to address another tragedy as we acknowledged the killing of the Afzaal family in London. A special note of thanks to Yusra, a Grade 11 student from the Upper School, who contributed to this message. Her words are powerful, and provide an invitation for reflection and action.

What makes Canada and the HC community so beautiful is the support available within. At the end of the day, the small amount of hate that exists within people does not overpower the immense amount of love and acceptance. It is your responsibility coming from a place of privilege to do your part. To do your part in educating yourself and others, to do your part in addressing something if you see it’s wrong, and to do your part in standing in solidarity with those affected by this act of hate. To conclude, I pray that the family and friends of the Afzaal family find peace and comfort with the support they are receiving and that action is taken by political leaders to ensure that this will be the last time something like this happens.

Wishing you peace.

Sincerely,

Kate

A Message from the Head of the Junior School: Friday, June 4, 2021

Dear JS Parents,

It has been a week filled with emotions, as we have learned of the decision to not have classes return to on-campus learning until the fall. While I know this is difficult, please be assured that we have been planning for this eventuality. It is important, despite the circumstances, that we end the year in a way that provides closure, and that is both meaningful and celebratory.

We are almost there, and we have done it together! I continue to be in awe of all that we have accomplished together, and look forward to an exceptional end to the year. Thank you for everyone’s ongoing support.

Please be sure to read this week’s blog in its entirety, as it contains important information regarding the last two weeks of school.

Should you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher, or to me.

Sincerely,

Kate

Junior School Update: Friday, May 29, 2021

Dear Junior School Parents,

Happy House Shout Day! It was such a joy to see over 280 JS students join together this afternoon for a House Activity, facilitated by our Junior School Prefects. I cannot tell you what a smile it put on my face to see them all in their house colours, participating so enthusiastically. This special reimagined event was followed by Legacy Prayers. Thank you to all of you who were able to attend. We had two old girls, and current JS parents speak about the impact that being an HC student has had on their lives. It truly showed how being part of the Havergal community doesn’t just end upon graduation, but is something that deepens and grows over time.

Wishing you all the best for the weekend ahead.

Sincerely,

Kate

A Message From the Head of Junior School: Friday, May 21, 2021

Dear Junior School Parents,

At the risk of tempting fate, it looks like spring may finally have sprung! The May 24th  weekend often feels like the beginning of the last stretch of the school year before heading off on summer holidays. As we head into the weeks ahead, I invite you to take some time to reflect upon your child’s many experiences over the course of the year. What will she most remember about 2020 -21? Is there something she is proud of accomplishing or overcoming? How was she a good friend, and was she supported by a friend? While we are thoughtfully preparing for end of year celebrations, I am conscious of helping our students to also stay present in the moment, and enjoy these final days together.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and sunny long weekend!

Sincerely,

Kate White

JS Chaplain

It is with mixed emotion that I share the news with you that Rev. Stephanie Douglas will be returning to full time parish ministry in Pickering at the end of this academic year. This is a  wonderful opportunity for her to once again lead a church, and will also allow her greater flexibility in her day to day life, as well as to spend more time with her family.

Rev. Douglas has asked that I share a personal note of thanks, which is as follows:

“I am so thankful to Havergal for the opportunity to be a part of a community dedicated to the education of girls. I am grateful to the admin for their support, personally and professionally, and to colleagues who taught me to teach and exposed me to a wealth of insights from the world of education. I am grateful to the students; coming to spend my days with them, five days a week, has been a true joy. My time at Havergal has stretched me, and I will be forever grateful for the relationships I developed at the school.”

We are grateful for having had the opportunity to work alongside Rev. Douglas, and for her many contributions. Her ability to gain the trust of her colleagues, offer sage advice, and listen deeply will continue to be an asset to those in her new community. Please join me in wishing her the very best in this next chapter. Havergal has begun the process of recruiting a full time (JK – 12) Chaplain.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, April 30, 2021

Dear Junior School Parents,

As the saying goes “April showers bring May Flowers!” With this week’s weather in mind, and the forecast calling for more wet days ahead, I can only assume that the flowers will be beautiful this year!  As we head into the weekend, I hope that the rain subsides enough for you to spend some quality time outdoors! We will be speaking with the JS students in prayers next week about how important this is, as well as some tips for getting a good night’s rest.  Should you wish to join us, Prayers takes place on Mondays and Fridays between 3:00 pm and 3:20 pm. The link can be found on your child’s Seesaw page or on Google Classroom.

Sincerely,

Kate White

Upcoming Reading Assessments

  • Every Fall and Spring, we conduct one-on-one reading assessments with students. These assessments provide us with key information about each student as a reader, at the present moment and throughout her years as a JS student. They also enable us to monitor the overall effectiveness of our literacy instruction across the school and pinpoint areas for growth and development. We value what we learn from this data so we do not want to forego these assessments, even as we find ourselves in these extraordinary circumstances.
  • During the month of May, you may notice an increase in the number of asynchronous learning periods for your daughter. This is due to the fact that teachers will be working one on one with students to conduct these assessments. Teachers will still meet with students at the beginning of class to get them started on the learning for that period, but will then have students leave the zoom meeting in order to conduct an assessment with a student. Alternatively, a teacher may request to meet with your daughter outside of class time.
  • Students are very accustomed to these assessments and your child does not need to do anything extra in order to be prepared. Our goal is to accurately assess our students as readers – not to catch them out. Teachers will make adjustments as necessary while conducting these assessments to try and mitigate any additional challenges presented by them being remote in order to support your daughter in demonstrating her strongest reading skills. This assessment, while valuable, is one of many pieces we use to monitor and assess your daughter’s growth and achievement in reading.
  • Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Nancy Tulli (ntulli@havergal.on.ca), JK – 6 Literacy Coordinator
