A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, April 29

Dear Junior School Parents,

Happy Friday! The students have been thoroughly enjoying the sunshine over the last few days. It has been so wonderful to see them make use of our beautiful campus, playing basketball, soccer, and softball, running through the Lisa Hardie Trail, and having some of their classes out of the building, learning in The Cohen Amphitheater, and the Outdoor Classroom. When I think back to the last eighteen months, and the amount of time we spent indoors, I find myself particularly grateful that we are surrounded by the most beautiful environment. In the words of Laura Ingalls Wilder “some good old fashioned fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat!” As we head into the weekend, I wish you both in abundance.

Warmly,

Kate White – Head, Junior School

A Message from the Head of the Junior School – Friday, April 22, 2022

Dear Junior School Parents,

A sincere note of thanks to all of you for joining us yesterday for our Founders’ Day Open House. It was simply glorious to see the halls buzzing with the feeling of community…something that we have missed so dearly over the past two years. The students were absolutely beaming, and so proud to show their loved ones where they sit, their work, and introduce friends.

Friday, April 22 is Earth Day, and we celebrated this with a very special prayers, led by Ms. Mastri, in which she shared the story of the Lisa Hardie Trail. I have linked the VIDEO HERE  so that you can watch the story as well. We are so fortunate to have 22 beautiful acres at HC, and this morning was an important reminder to take care of it, not just today, but everyday.

Warmly,

Kate White – Head, Junior School

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Thursday, April 14, 2022

Dear Junior School Parents,

It was a “Feel Good Day” in the Junior School today, where our Grade 6 leaders invited JS students to dress in something that makes them feel their very best. From hockey jerseys, to party dresses, to PJs, our students took full advantage of the day to share just some of the things that help them to thrive. A special hot chocolate/hot apple cider treat was also enjoyed by all.

It is also my pleasure to let you know that Ms. Liz Watt will be returning from her maternity leave, on Tuesday, April 19, as Assistant Head. We are very much looking forward to having her back on campus. I am beyond grateful for the unbelievable professionalism, attention to detail, and deep care that Ms. Charlton has exhibited in her time at the Junior School as Interim Assistant Head. I look forward to welcoming back Ms. Watt next week, and to further acknowledging Ms. Charlton’s tremendous contributions when we come together as a community during our Closing Ceremony in June.

Ms. Watt and Ms. Charlton will work collaboratively from now until the end of the term, to ensure a smooth finish to the year, and to start planning for the 2022-2023 school year. Ms. Charlton will return to teaching in the Upper School in September, and Ms. Watt will continue on as JS Assistant Head. I ask that, until then, you Cc both Ms. Watt and Ms. Charlton in any communication intended for the Assistant Head.

Sincerely,

Kate White – Head, Junior School

Principal & HCPA Updates

Dear Havergal Families:

We would like to thank all who participated in our survey regarding the Father Daughter Dance, Mother Daughter Breakfasts, Grade 12 Mother Daughter Brunch and Junior School A-Mazing Race. We had very strong participation from both our parent and our Upper School student community. Your feedback is important to us and we thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and ideas with us.

We’ve shared information below on the responses to our parent and student survey. Overall, the vast majority of respondents (over 70%) were supportive of renaming the events to ensure that families of all shapes and sizes felt welcomed to participate. This is no doubt reflective of the variety of families represented within our school community. Given this insightful feedback from both students and parents, we will be making the following changes:

  • The Father Daughter Dance will be renamed to Gator Gala and will take place on Thursday, June 9 2022. Students attending can invite one significant adult of their choosing.
  • The Mother Daughter Breakfasts will now be called Havergal Family Breakfasts. Students attending from our major entry years (Grades 1, 5, 7 and 9) can invite one significant adult of their choosing.
  • The Grade 12 Mother Daughter Brunch will now be known as Grad Family Brunch. Grade 12 students will be encouraged to bring up to two significant adults to the event, which takes place in the fall.
  • The Junior School A-Mazing Race will retain its name and students can bring one significant adult of their choosing. This event will take place on Sunday, May 15, 2022.

Once again, thank you to everyone who shared feedback with us. We are looking forward to a wonderful series of community events this spring and fall.

Sincerely,

Katrina Samson

Founders’ Day Reminder & Strong Foundations, Strong Future Community Celebration

  • This year, our Founders’ Day theme, Strong Foundations: Bright Future compels us to celebrate our history while focusing on what we, as individuals and as a community, will do to help create a bright future as we move through this pandemic.
  • To mark this historic time and honour the strength of our collective community, each student and family member will be given a stone upon which they can write their name and, for students, their graduating year as well. These stones will be collected and made onto an art installation, similar to what is pictured below.
  • We look forward to welcoming our families to campus and to building together a bright future for the Havergal community. Parents are invited to join their child(ren) for an opportunity to tour the school with their child(ren), to participate in our Strong Foundations, Strong Future community activity and to take a family photo at our photo booth.
  • Please note for all families:
    • All students must be in their #1 Dress Uniform
    • Parking will be extremely limited so we encourage families who can, to walk or find alternative means of transportation
    • Gator Care will take place the Learning Hub in AM: green signs will redirect families (help from Facilities) & on regular door
    • All parents visiting need to be vaccinated and wear masks when not eating or drinking. We ask that you self screen using the TPH Screener prior to your arrival

Dr. Alex Russell Parent Talk Recording

  • It was a pleasure to see HC families in the Brenda Robson Hall last night for Dr. Russell’s presentation.
  • His topic of supporting teenage children during challenging times addressed many pertinent topics such as anxiety, the importance of the parent-teacher-student triangle, how ‘flow’ is a true marker for happiness and engagement, and when as parents, we need to sit on the park bench and not step in to their experience, even when that experience involves a non-chatistrophic, painful failure. We do encourage you to view the recording of the session through Havergal’s Youtube Channel.

“Feel Good Dress Down Day” at the Junior School – Thursday, April 14

The following is an announcement, written on behalf of our 6B Class. They have planned this as part of the Grade 6 Leadership work.

We would like to announce that on Thursday, April 14, 2022, the Junior School will be having a Feel Good Day!

This is a special day where students are allowed to wear clothes that make them feel good, or that represents something that they love! For example, if you love curling up with a good book, you could wear your PJs and bring a favourite book. Maybe you love summertime,  and you could wear summer clothing and bring a beach ball! As long as it makes you feel good, students are invited to wear it and to bring something to represent what makes them “feel good.”

Students are invited to participate in optional activities on this day. This will include sharing why they wore the clothes they are wearing, or what item they brought, and to share what makes them “feel good.”  We have also arranged for students to have hot chocolate or hot apple cider.

Wishing a Fond Farewell to Tony diCosmo, Executive Director, Advancement & Community Relations

After almost six years in his role, Tony diCosmo has resigned as Executive Director of Advancement and Community Relations. His last day with Havergal is Friday, April 8th.

After leading the school through the successful completion of the Limitless Campaign, and as the school looks to the future as it emerges from the pandemic, Tony felt it was the right time to step away and pursue other opportunities.

I would like to thank Tony for his significant contributions to Havergal, specifically his leadership of the Limitless Campaign and the great work he has done with both our alumni and parent communities. His warmth and professionalism have made him a pleasure to work with and he will be missed by faculty, staff, parents, and alumni.

Please join me in wishing Tony all the very best in his future endeavors. We’ll miss his warm and compassionate nature and are grateful for the significant contribution he has made to the Havergal community.

Founder’s Day – Parents Welcome on Campus

As previously communicated, we will be celebrating Founders’ Day on April 21, 2022. This annual event marks the anniversary of the cornerstone being laid in 1926 at Havergal’s “New School” on Avenue Road. It holds special meaning because it provides an opportunity to reflect on the values and traditions established at Havergal since its founding in 1894.

You will have received grade-specific information earlier about how you can join your daughters on campus for part of this special day. Please check your inbox and mark the date on your calendar!

The Power of Girls’ Education

From time to time, I like to share articles and information with parents that support our mission and core values.  While you have made the conscious choice to invest in a girls’-centred education for your child, it’s good to have the facts about why education for girls and women must continue to be a priority across the globe.  In February, the World Bank updated their Girls Education Overview with statistics showing the impact of COVID-19 on girls education globally.  It’s a quick read and a great reminder that the investment we make in girls and women supports shared prosperity for all.  As a UNESCO School we are called to foster positive social change, and reminding ourselves about the importance of investing in our girls is an important way to live Havergal’s mission to prepare young women to make a difference.

School Resilience Survey

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As part of the Havergal’s ongoing commitment to wellbeing as outlined in the Strategic Direction 2020+, we are conducting a School Resilience Survey. The pandemic has triggered unique and dynamic issues that can affect our students’ wellbeing and sense of connectedness to the school. To keep our community healthy, we are committed to taking proactive steps to ensure a positive school climate where students are able to flourish.

Resilience is defined as the maintenance of positive adjustment in the context of exposure to significant adversity. A resilience survey can help us gather actionable data about our students’ mental health and wellbeing as well as their sense of connection with peers and adults at school. Results from the survey will enable us to make the most impactful changes to our programming as it relates to wellbeing by being thoughtful and responsive to our students’ needs, as well as helping to monitor progress.

To help support us in this important work, we have hired Authentic Connections. The questionnaires were developed from several standard measures that ask youth questions about their feelings and behaviors. No identifying information – including IP addresses – will be collected. Your child’s name will not appear anywhere on his or her responses, and questionnaires are all stored according to random ID numbers, specially allotted for this survey. The survey will be administered on May 3, 2022 .

  • Students in Grade 2 to 5 will be invited to complete the Children’s Resilience Survey (CRS), which is designed to take between 10 and 15 minutes, online during class time
  • Students in Grades 6 through to 12 will be invited to complete the High Achieving Schools Survey (HASS), which is designed to take approximately 40 minutes, online during Homeroom/Form/Advisory time
  • Participation is voluntary and students can skip questions they do not want to answer.

If you do not want your child to participate, please complete this google form and submit by April 22, 2022. Thank you very much for your support in this endeavor, and for all you do to keep the Havergal College community healthy.

Sincerely,

Meagan Yarmey PhD

Reporting Absences

  • If your child will be absent for multiple days, you can select all the days in the SchoolPass app. We recommend and ask that you do this if your child is going to be absent for multiple days due to isolation or for an extended absence.
    • Please do not select one day for an absence and then use the notes section to report they will be away for multiple days. Instead, please select all of the dates on the SchoolPass calendar and then put the reason in the notes field.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, April 1, 2022

Dear Junior School Parents,

A very warm welcome back after the March Break! It has been absolutely wonderful seeing all of the students back at school. We have returned to eating in the dining hall, playing together across grades and cohorts, and welcoming visitors to the building. Today, we were thrilled our Grade 3s and 4s had the opportunity to work with representatives from Variety Village, where they learned more about the organization, as well as how to play Wheelchair Soccer, and other games. Our Grade 6s even went on their first field trip in over two years, exploring art installations at the beach. Be sure to check our HC’s Instagram page to see pictures of these two fabulous experiences. We are eagerly planning for even more back to “normal” opportunities to end our final term of the year with a bang.

Sincerely,

Kate White – Head, Junior School

COVID-19 testing if you are ill and reporting positive COVID-19 results

  • When a student is ill, or has symptoms associated with COVID-19 they may test using a PCR take home test, two Rapid Antigen Tests separated by a minimum of 24 hours, or isolate for a minimum of 5 days after symptom onset. See details on how to complete testing in the Symptomatic COVID-19 Testing For Students and Employees at Havergal. Even with negative test results, students must have symptoms improving for 24 hours, prior to returning to school. All students should maintain a stock of two Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) at home in the event that they become ill. Most students will have many tests at home from our previous Rapid Antigen Screening Program (RASP). Safety Reminders When Entering and Exiting the JS Property

  • There is a speed limit of 10 km an hour while on the JS Driveway and Parking lot. It is critical that this be observed, for the safety of all of our community.
  • It is not permitted to walk across the portion of the driveway that exits onto Rosewell. Visibility is limited, cars are in motion, and someone could be critically injured if hit.

Before & After School Co-curriculars

Masks

  • The Ontario government announced that mandatory masking for schools has been removed as of March 21. Masking at Havergal will now be optional for all students and employees. We recognize that students and employees may choose to continue to wear their masks and Havergal will remain a mask-friendly environment.
  • We ask that everyone in our community be supportive of students’ and employees’ individual choices and model kindness and compassion.
  • Additionally, we ask that you have individual discussions with your children about being respectful of individual choice, including refraining from asking questions about why or why not someone is wearing a mask, and to ensure that children understand there are some circumstances at school which will still require mask-wearing, such as during some group assemblies. Students are still required to have a medical mask with them for times and circumstances in which they are required.
  • In some instances masks will continue to be required:
    • For this period of transition, we ask that all students continue to wear masks when in large gatherings such as Prayers.
    • For 14 days upon return from travel outside of Canada, as required by current federal travel requirements.
    • For six to 10 days after a self-isolation period of five days, following a COVID-19 diagnosis as outlined by TPH.
    • If you are identified as a close contact of someone with COVID-19, masks are required for 10 days from your last exposure, as outlined by TPH.

A Message from the Head of the Junior School: Friday, March 4, 2022

Dear Junior School Parents,

We, like you, have been watching the devastating humanitarian crisis in Ukraine with profound sadness and disbelief. As we are steadfast in our mission to prepare women to make a difference, we recognize the strength and courage of all of those involved. As a global community, with boarding students, faculty and staff from around the world, we are acutely aware of the many personal connections to what is happening. Many of our students have questions about what is happening, and are trying to make sense of what they are seeing and hearing. We are navigating these conversations at Havergal, in ways that are age and stage appropriate and wanted to re-share some resources that may be helpful, for discussions at home.

In addition, we also wanted to share a couple of donation opportunities, initiated by members of our community: Ukraine Relief Donation Opportunities.

Sincerely,

Kate White – Head, Junior School

JJ Patterson – Head, Middle School

Deirdre Timusk – Head, Senior School

A Message From the Head of the Junior School: Friday, February 25, 2022

Dear Junior School Parents,

This Wednesday, members of the HC community participated in Pink Shirt Day. Today, our Junior School Prefect, Tomisin, shared The Story of Pink Shirt Day, helped explain what bullying is and is not, ways to stand up for yourself and The Importance of Being an Upstander. Finally, she invited us to take part in “The Kindness Challenge,” which was put together by the Junior School Council, made up of Upper School students.

Finally, in recognition of the turmoil occurring in the world, and those affected by it, we closed our time together this morning with the following prayer:

Gracious Lord, some areas of your and our fragile world are experiencing injustice and oppression right now. Please grant peace and hope to all who experience heartache and despair. Help the world know what is right and what is wrong. Grant your wisdom to those in authority in our nations to bring your just and respectful rule. In your goodness, encourage us to pray always for peace and for an end to division among persons, countries and nations. May justice prevail everywhere. Where we are, may our prayerful support of one another be known, and felt  as we work together for the end of all conflict and for lasting peace.

Sincerely,

Kate

The bright colours, laughter and sense of community was just the thing to give us all a boost in the cold days of February. The icing on the cake was definitely the return of Hockey Day, where we were able to join in for the pep rally as a whole school, and cheer on our HC Team. The 5 – 2 victory made it all the sweeter.

This week’s blog contains information on the following:

Wishing you all a joyful Family Day Weekend.

Sincerely,

Kate

    • We ask that you either park on the street, or on the JS back parking lot and walk your child to the front door so that we can ensure that their school pass has been completed. Once confirmed, a Grade 6 student will walk your child around the school to the back.
    • This is optional, and you can still walk your child on your own, if that is your preference.
    • Please note that our pick-up routine remains unchanged for the time being.

Pink Shirt Day – Wednesday, February 23

  • Students in JK to Grade 12 will be marking Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, February 23. This will be a full grub day, and students are invited to wear a pink shirt to show that they say YES to kindness, and NO to bullying.
  • While we speak to our students about the difference between being rude, being mean and bullying on a regular basis, Pink Shirt Day highlights the importance of choosing to lift each other up, how to be an “upstander” and the effects that bullying can have.
  •  Should you wish to know more, please visit the Pink Shirt Day Website.

Update on COVID-19 Protocols and School Visitors

  • As the province eases some of the COVID-19 public health measures, Havergal will be implementing a gradual and safe approach to having visitors on campus. All visitors will still be required to complete a wellness screening and provide proof of vaccination along with valid photo identification upon entry to the school.
  • Guests will now be permitted to visit the school for appointments. For other Havergal group events there may be  slightly different protocols based on the capacity limits of spaces, which will be communicated with you prior to the event.
  • Thank you for your cooperation in helping us protect the wellness of our school community and ensuring we are taking every precaution to keep students learning in person on campus.

COVID-19 Reporting

  • We will continue to post a daily update about COVID-19 positive cases (rapid antigen and PCR), that are reported to Havergal, through Thrive Health. The data will be identified by cohort and will include the student’s last known date on campus. You can find this information HERE.
  • It is important that you check this daily, as it contains the most up to date information regarding reported positive cases of COVID-19.
  • Accessing classes via Zoom is only available for students isolating due to COVID-19 or those with a medical/visa accommodation.
    • If a student is away due to COVID-19 isolation, families should communicate this to the school by putting a note/reason in SchoolPass that says “isolating.” It might take up to 24hrs for teachers to make their Zoom links available to a student depending on when we get the information. Assessments will be written in person unless the teacher requests otherwise.
  • If a student is going to be away for longer than 5 days, please contact your child’s Head of School to discuss the situation. Extended absences will include access to class materials on Veracross and asynchronous work only. Access to zoom links will not be permitted.
