A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, November 25

Dear JS Families,

What an eventful and exciting week!

Students had the opportunity to participate in numerous activities related to “Thrive Week.” Highlights include visits from therapy dogs in JK to Grade 6, a workshop from the author of “Living with Viola”, Rosena Fung, Drama Activities where students role played a variety of social interactions, and participation in “Sound Baths,” zentangle, and meditation experiences. While Thrive Week highlights some of the strategies and skills that we can use to navigate all of life’s emotions, so that we are better able to thrive, our goal is to practice these each and every day.

Sincerely,

Kate

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, November 11

Dear JS Families,

What a pleasure it was to welcome back our Grandpals to the Junior School this week! The halls were simply buzzing as our students proudly toured their classroom and favourite spaces around campus. We also paid tribute, on this day, to all those who gave their lives for our country, through our Remembrance Day Service. We are preparing a video of this service, and look forward to sharing it with you soon.

We hope that the November Midterm Break brings the opportunity for some relaxation, and time with friends and family.

Sincerely,

Kate

HEADING

Safe Driving Both on and off Havergal Property

Since the beginning of the year we have observed several incidents of unsafe driving, particularly when entering or exiting the Junior School driveway. This has the very real potential to result in serious injury, or worse.

As you know, we are located in a residential area, and share the street with two other schools, as well as with all those who live on Rosewell Ave, and surrounding streets. As such, it is not uncommon for there to be traffic congestion during both drop-off and pick-up times. It also means that there are a number of pedestrians, both from and outside of the Havergal community.

To ensure the highest level of safety for everyone, Havergal has taken the following measures:

  • Active daily presence by our security team during drop-off and pick-up;
  • Signage along the driveway indicating where to park, and that the speed limit is 10 km/hr;
  • Implementation of a staggered dismissal schedule to alleviate the number of cars on campus at any given time;
  • Use of School Pass to safely and efficiently alert students when an authorized adult has arrived to pick them up;
  • Flashing Indicators around the crosswalk reminding drivers to slow down;
  • Working with the city to ensure that we consistently have a crossing-guard during drop-off and dismissal times.

We know that you share our belief that safety is our top priority. As such, we require your cooperation and compliance with the following:

  1. Slowing down, not just on Havergal property, but along the street as well;
  2. Being alert, looking out for pedestrians, and other cars, and following the directions of our security team and the Crossing Guard;
  3. Using the Crosswalk, where our Crossing Guard is stationed, to cross the street;
  4. NOT walking across the exit lane to drop-off or pick up your child. Similarly, NOT walking off the property, where cars are entering.
  5. Following the rules of the road! Incidents of parking in front of fire hydrants and other no parking zones have been noted, and contribute to an unsafe environment.

If you have any questions, or if you have witnessed a driving infraction on the Junior School Campus or on Rosewell Avenue in front of the school, please contact our Campus Security team at:

416-483-3519, or rstepien@havergal.on.ca o

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, November 4

Dear Junior School Families,

Today in prayers, we celebrated the many students who participated in our Fall Athletic Program. I invite you to take a few minutes to watch this AMAZING VIDEO, made by our athletic director, Ms. Anna Bartlett which highlights our teams, games, and overall spirit!

We also had the opportunity to hear from Grade 6 student, Juliette, who was the first Junior Division recipient of the Dovigi Kindness Award in June, who shared what it means to be kind.

This award will be given annually in June, in honour of one Primary and one Junior student who is consistently kind. Each recipient is someone who shows compassion to others, has the integrity to do the right thing, even when no one is watching, exhibits the courage to stand up and speak up when they see others being treated unfairly, and inquires about how they can make the world a better place. These individuals give generously of themselves, without seeking recognition or reward. They inspire others to make the Junior School community a place where people feel that they belong, are valued, respected and understood.

We look forward to hearing from Maria, in Grade 2, who was our first primary student to receive this important award at another upcoming prayers.

Finally, I am curious of any of you heard the loud cheers and screaming coming from the JS Gym at lunchtime today, where our Grade 6s and JS Faculty and Staff faced against each other in a nail biting game of basketball?! It was a really joyful way to end off our week!

Sincerely,

Kate

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, October 28, 2022

Dear Junior School Families,

Thank you so much for participating in our JS Parent-Teacher Conferences!

These important conversations provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, to see the areas in which she is thriving, and to discuss targeted plans for continued growth. Moreover, they allow us to further strengthen the relationship between home and school.  It is important to remember, however, that while the conferences provide an overview of your child’s academic and social-emotional development, ongoing feedback throughout the year is paramount.  Should you ever have questions or concerns, we invite you to contact us and be assured that we will do the same.

Sincerely,

Kate

Catch Up Payments – An Ontario Government Initiative

Today, the Ontario government launched Catch Up Payments, offering families direct financial support to support their children as they catch up. This money can be used to help to offset costs, whether that be for educational supplies, additional tutoring supports or other items to help their children address learning needs resulting from the pandemic. This new initiative commits a total of $365 million in direct financial relief for parents.

Families of students in publicly funded, private, First Nation/federally-operated or home-school settings will receive financial support. Students (up to 18 years old) can receive $200 per child, while students with special education needs (up to 21 years old) can receive $250. Families can apply for Catch Up Payments through a secure website where they can create a unique profile for each eligible student and check the status of their application throughout the process.

Applications for Catch Up Payments are now open and will remain open until March 31, 2023.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, October 21, 2022

Dear Junior School Families,

It was another FANTASTIC week in the Junior School!

We sadly said thank you and goodbye to Mr. Arellano, who has worked as part of our facilities team in the JS for over twenty years, and wished him well in his retirement. We also shared our appreciation and said goodbye to Mrs. Walker in the Junior School Office, who has accepted a position with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board, closer to home.

The JS Athletics’ Program is fully up and running! Our U12s went to a swim meet at Branksome, our U9s went to a Cross-Country Mtg at Crestwood, and HC hosted a Cross-Country Meet, basketball and soccer games on campus!

Our Grade 4s got busy working alongside Dougan Associates, our ecological consultants, with planting along the Lisa Hardie Trail. This activity served as the beginning of the next phase of the school’s restoration initiative to rebuild the Carolinian forest along the Burke Brooke.

In Prayers this morning, students and our amazing security guard, Lucky, shared their Diwali traditions, and why the festival of lights, that symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, is such an important part of their culture.

Finally, we are thrilled to share that thanks to your generosity Havergal raised  $39,837.66 for our community partnerships during Celebration Saturday 💚💛

To see more pics from this week, please be sure to visit Havergal’s Instagram and Facebook pages!

Sincerely,

Kate

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, October 14, 2022

Dear Junior School Families,

This week, in prayers, we recognized both World Mental Health Day, and The International Day of the Girl Child. As an all-girls’ school, we are particularly mindful  of how girls around the world continue to face challenges to their education, as well as to their physical and mental wellbeing. We will, throughout the year, continue to support our students to develop the necessary mindsets and strategies to thrive, and “make a difference” not only as individuals, but as contributing members of a broader society.

Sincerely,

Kate

Drop-off and Pick-Up Safety Routines

The safety of your children is our top priority, and we need your cooperation and compliance with the following:

  1. Use the Crosswalk, where our Crossing Guard is stationed, to cross the street;
  2. Do NOT walk across the exit lane to drop-off or pick up your child. Exiting cars may not see you;
  3. Stay in the line while dropping off or picking up. “Jumping the Cue,” unless otherwise advised by a member of our security team is NOT permitted.

Outdoor Clothing

Daily outdoor play is an integral part of the day, and it is essential that our students have what they need to make the most of this time. Knowing how to dress your daughter for outdoor play in any weather can make a HUGE difference to the amount of time she is happy to spend outside. Clothing should remove the distractions that less-than-ideal weather imposes, leaving kids free to focus on play, not the physical discomfort of being “too hot” or “too wet” or “too cold”.

As we make the transition from summer to fall please ensure that your daughter arrives at school with the appropriate outdoor clothing. In the days to come, this may include items such as a raincoat, rain boots, a warmer jacket, sweatpants or splash pants, mitts, or a hat.

Diwali Prayers & Parent Reception – Friday, October 21

Parents are invited to attend the Junior School Diwali Prayers & Parent Reception on Friday, October 21 from 8:30 to 9 am in the JS Gym, and afterwards for a reception of coffee, tea and snacks in the JS Dining Hall from 9:00 am to 9:30 am. Students are invited to wear their traditional or cultural dress on this day.

It was so wonderful to have the JS Harvest Festival Service once again, in Brenda Robson Hall! As promised, here is the RECORDING for your reference.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Thursday, October 8, 2022

Dear Junior School Families,

What better way to start the Thanksgiving long weekend, than with the Harvest Festival! I feel particularly grateful to our students, who under the thoughtful care and direction of Mr. Jeff MacLean and Ms. Rachel Read, sang so beautifully!  We are also thankful to our faculty and staff for all of their support to prepare for this event. For all of those who were able to join us, we hope you left with warm and joyful hearts.

Harvest Festival is a longstanding Havergal Junior School tradition. It not only allows us to acknowledge all of our many blessings but also helps us to remember the importance of sharing the bounty.  We are also pleased to let you know that our community was able to collect close to 2000 pounds of food for the North York Harvest Food Bank. Thank you for your generosity.

We also came together this afternoon to once again participate in the Terry Fox Run. Students from JK to Grade 6 participated, and it was so lovely to see so many families join us.

On behalf of all of the staff and faculty of the Junior School, we wish you a restful and happy Thanksgiving weekend.

Sincerely,

Kate

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, September 30

Dear Junior School Families,

This week Havergal observed Truth and Reconciliation Week. Occurring from Monday, September 26 to Friday, September 30, this is a time for all Canadians to learn more about residential schools, their impact on Indigenous peoples today, and how to participate in meaningful reconciliation. Students in the Junior School participated in a number of activities, readings, and separate assemblies for our students in JK/SK, Grade 1 to 3, and Grades 4 – 6 throughout the week

We were particularly honoured to welcome Mr. Herbie Barnes, a long-time friend and partner of Havergal College to the Junior School this morning. An Anishinaabe theatre artist from Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation on Manitoulin Island, Mr. Barnes was raised in Toronto. He is an accomplished playwright, performer, director and arts educator whose 30-year-career spans stages across North America. He was named as the Artistic Director of Young People’s Theatre in 2021. Today, he spoke to us about his family’s experience, the legacy of residential schools, and the importance of recognizing Orange Shirt Day and ways in which we can act as allies.

Sincerely,

Kate

LATEST NEWS

Truth and Reconciliation Week (Monday, September 26 – Friday, September 30)

Havergal College will honour Truth and Reconciliation Week between September 26 – 30th with in-class programming throughout the week. The week will culminate on Friday, September 30th with Orange Shirt Day, where the JS will commemorate residential school survivors with guest speaker, Herbie Barnes, Artistic Director of Young People’s Theatre.

Students are invited to wear orange t-shirts on the 30th over their uniforms. If you would like to purchase an orange shirt for your child, it is encouraged to purchase from an Indigenous artist or these Indigenous retailers. Please note that this will not be considered a “grub” day.

What to Know about Returning to School After Illness

Please be advised that after illness or testing positive for COVID, students are able to return 24 hours after symptoms have improved (48 hours if symptoms are Gastro-Intestinal – GI – related), and are advised to wear a mask for 10 days after symptom onset and try to maintain distance when taking masks off and eating.

Magnus Health – Updating Your Child’s Health Information

This is a reminder to have parents complete updating their child’s health information in Magnus Health by September 23, 2022 so that we can ensure that we have the most up to date information for our athletic teams, excursions, food services etc. You can access Magnus Health from the Parent Portal by clicking on the Update My Child’s Health Information button located on all of the landing pages, or under the My Household menu in the navigation bar.  Please reserve 20-30 minutes per child to complete this process. Once information is updated in our system it will be reviewed and approved by the Health Centre and shared as needed to support your child’s health and wellbeing. If your child is seen by a nurse in the Junior School, notes from their visit can be shared through the Magnus Health portal to keep you updated on their visit. Please note, if they are seen for an urgent matter, you will receive a call from the nurse, rather than an update through Magnus.

Pick Up and Dismissal from Clubs, Athletics, Performing Arts

Co Curricular activities are off to a roaring start!! When co-curricular activities are completed each day, the instructors, coaches and teachers will bring students to the front doors of the Junior School for dismissal.

 If you are unable to make it on time to pick up your daughter, please make sure to register her in Gator Care before 9am on the day required.

Gator Care

Our Gator Care best practices have changed a bit this year. We are no longer accepting students in Gator Care unless they are registered.

Please email gatorcare@havergal.on.ca by 9am of the day you would like to enroll your daughter. This allows our aftercare team to plan accordingly and also helps to ensure the correct ratios for the safety of our students. Students who are not registered will be brought to security to wait to be picked up.

Neighbourly Traffic Request

We have had some of our neighbours reach out with concerns that members of our community are making illegal and dangerous u-turns on our surrounding streets, as well as mounting the sidewalks and driving on lawns. Traffic on Rosewell Ave and surrounding streets is exceptionally busy, especially at drop-off and pick-up. Please drive safely and courteously.
