What a pleasure it was to come together as a community for our annual Grade 1 – 6 Christmas Concert on Wednesday! There was a special magic in the air as our students sang magnificently and helped usher us into the holiday spirit.
In the final piece of the concert, entitled “There is Peace” by Jim Papoulis,” students invited us to think about how in a world where there is conflict, peace can be found inside each and every one of us. We spoke about how while for many, this is the “most wonderful time of the year”, for others it can be a time of amplified silence, bringing on feelings of sadness or loss. With this in mind, my challenge for all of us as we embark on the winter break is to take inspiration from this song, and:
Look beyond the tinsel: If you know a neighbor, a colleague, or a friend who might be finding this season difficult, reach out.
Check in: Send the text, make the call, or drop off a card.
Be the Peace: Let the melody of the song translate into action. A small gesture of kindness is the most authentic way to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.
If you were unable to attend or simply want to re-live the magic, I highly encourage you to watch the full concert on Havergal’s Youtube Channel.
For all those celebrating the start of Hunukkah on Sunday, we wish you a joyful celebration with family and friends.
Warmly
Kate

Term 1 Report Cards Available on Wednesday, December 17, 4 pm
Term 1 report cards will be available for parents and students to access through the Veracross portal on Wednesday, December 17 at 4:00pm.
December report cards represent a snapshot of a student’s achievements, progress, and areas for growth at this point in the academic year. The objective of a report card is to communicate what a student has learned and how she is developing as a learner across each discipline.
Partnership between Havergal and parents is key to student success. We encourage you to take time to review the report card, discuss it with your child, and identify any key themes or questions you might have. If you have any questions about specific courses, please reach out directly to the teacher; they are eager to partner with you.
Further information on how to access the report cards will be emailed next week. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Lam Nguyen, Dean of Academics.
Locker and Cubby Clean out Next Week
All students are asked to bring all personal belongings home over the Winter Break. This is so that our cleaners are able to do an extra deep cleaning during the break.
Please send your child to school with extra bags to carry their things home.
Teachers will be on hand to support the students with this task.

Singer-Songwriter Craig Cardiff Visits the Junior School (8:30 am – 8:55 am in the JS Gym)
Welcome to December! This season is full of joy, but let’s be honest—it is also incredibly full. Between holiday events, darker days, and endless to-do lists, it is natural for both students and parents to feel their batteries running low. While we want to make magic happen, remember that we cannot pour from an empty cup.
To help navigate the bustle, here are a few quick strategies to consider:
Protect the Routine: Even amidst the excitement, consistent bedtimes help regulate everyone’s energy.
Embrace “Good Enough”: Give yourself permission to do less. A simple night in is often better than a frantic outing.
Schedule the “Nothing”: Deliberately block out time on your calendar for rest. Treat it as an appointment you cannot miss.
Connection over Perfection: Ten minutes of reading together can reset a child’s nervous system better than any gift.
Wishing you all a peaceful and joyful slide into the winter break!
Warmly
Kate

Health Centre Reminder – Viral Illness Season
As we move further into the viral illness season, we are seeing an increase in common respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses. We kindly ask families to monitor their children for any signs of illness and to keep students home if they are unwell.
Symptoms that warrant staying home include:
Fever
Sore throat
Cough and congestion
Vomiting or diarrhea
General fatigue or feeling unwell
Keeping students home when they are sick helps protect classmates, staff, and our broader school community. Students may return to school once they are feeling better and able to fully participate in the school day.
Please refer to the image below for a helpful visual reminder of when to stay home and when to return.
Thank you for your support in keeping our school community healthy! The Health Centre

New Circles Holiday Angel Program (Nov 17 – Dec 2)
This November, Havergal College is pleased to once again be collaborating with our long-time community partners, New Circles, in support of their Holiday Angels Program. Our Grade 5 students, as part of their Leadership Programming, have been working with their teachers to run this important initiative in the Junior School.
What is the Holiday Angels Program?
The Holiday Angel Program matches generous donors with client families, many of whom face significant challenges and are newcomers to Canada, to help meet urgent needs and make holiday wishes come true.
Which Families From New Circles Will Havergal Be Supporting?
The Junior School will be sponsoring five families this year. This week, each grade was “introduced” to their family. This included learning a little bit about each member of the family, what brought them to Canada, and what some of their most immediate needs are. These Family Profiles and grade assignments can be found below.
How Can You Help?
Each family has made requests for specific gift cards. This allows them to purchase the items that they most need from specific stores, that they can easily access.
Please note:
Only gift cards can be accepted as donations. Cash donations cannot be accepted.
To ensure that a gift card is valid, we ask that the activation receipt be attached to each gift card. Please also write the dollar amount purchased on each gift card.
What is the Recommended Donation Amount for Gift Cards?
Ultimately, as a family, please decide on the donation amount that works best for you.
To ensure that a gift card is valid, we ask that the activation receipt be attached to each gift card. New Circles and the Holiday Angel families are thankful for all donations that they receive!
When and How are Donations Being Accepted?
Donations can be made anytime between now, and December 2nd.
Students should bring their donations, in an envelope with their name on it, and give them to their homeroom teacher.
Am I able to get a Tax Receipt for the Donation?
Yes! Tax receipts can only be issued by New Circles for donations above $25. Should you require a tax receipt:
Be sure to add your HAP # (This is the family you are donating to. It is located on the family information page on the top right.)
Attach the gift card, activation receipt and tax form together in an envelope and send them into school to your child’s homeroom teacher (s).
Please note:
Tax Receipts can only be issued by New Circles for donations above $25 that have all the necessary components attached.
On behalf of the Junior School and our Partners at New Circles thank you for your generosity! Every donation will go a long way in making the holiday season a little brighter this year.
For reasons of privacy, Information regarding the family that each Grade is supporting, will be sent to you separately via email.
Support the Havergal Fund
Starting in 2026, families will be invited to support the Havergal Fund during registration and re-registration, making it simpler than ever to participate. Every gift plays a vital role in enriching programs, supporting faculty excellence, and creating opportunities for our students to grow, thrive, and reach their potential. When families make Havergal one of their top philanthropic priorities, our girls feel the impact of that support in their everyday experience.
If you haven’t made your 2025 gift to the annual fund, you can do so now by clickingHERE. Gifts made before the end of the year may provide tax advantages while having an immediate impact.
WHAT IS NEW IN GATOR CARE?
Should your daughter attend Gator Care on a regular basis, we encourage you to read theGator Care Monthly Blast. This will provide you with a high-level overview of what is happening, and some quick reminders.
The last day to send your contribution is Monday, December 8. When you e-transfer your donation to hcpatreasurer@gmail.com, please include your daughter’s name and grade/cohort in the message field.
Please see last week’s edition of The Weekly for full details.
Thank you for your generosity and for joining us in showing appreciation for our outstanding faculty and staff.

Preloved Uniforms: Volunteers Needed!
We are looking for volunteers to help once per year by collecting donations from the Junior and Upper School bins, sorting and washing uniforms, and returning items to the HCPA closet.
It is hard to believe that we are soon entering the last week of November, and that the winter holidays will soon be here!
This week’s edition of “The Weekly – Junior School” contains a lot of critical information as we start to head into the holiday season. I invite you to grab a cup of tea, put your feet up, and take some time to learn about all that is coming up!
Sincerely,
Kate
Today’s edition of “The Weekly” contains information on the following:
A very heartfelt thank you to our parent community for their support of the teacher wish lists at the book fair this year. It is with deep appreciation that we are able to share that the lists were almost completely cleared. Teachers are so excited to have these fresh books to share with students in the classroom.
We had a very successful book fair which will also support many new additions of books and materials to the library as well!
If any items were back ordered for your child, Ella Minnow is expecting a 1 to 2 week turnaround. Please reach out to me if you notice a longer wait time – it will help me a lot if you could let me know if anything is missing.

REMINDERS
Daily Uniform Expectations
Wearing the school uniform well and with pride signals to our community that we distinguish ourselves by our commitment to our values and our everyday actions.
Students are expected to wear the school uniform correctly at all times. Shirts are to be tucked in and shoes polished. Kilts must be hemmed to an appropriate length (9 cm above the knee) and socks must be pulled up. Shoes must be tied. Non-uniform items may not be worn in the school during school hours. School uniforms must be clean and tidy.
We have been working closely with students at school this year, in support of this.
Here are a few reminders that we would value your help with in the Junior School:
No makeup is permitted in the Junior School.
Nail polish is permitted (Junior and Upper Schools). No acrylic or “bio-gels” are permitted in the Junior School. Upper School students should keep manicures short so they are able to participate in physically active school activities.
A small stud or small ring may be worn in the nose and studs, small hoops (the size of a quarter) or small drop earrings may be worn in the ears.
In the Junior School, wearing multiple bracelets and necklaces is not permitted.
Hair should be a natural colour for Junior School students (this includes coloured hair extensions).
There is still some space available in the following clubs: JK & SK Lego; Active Games for gr. 1 – 3; Chess for gr. 1 and Circus & Acro for gr. 4 – 6. Use this linkto register.
Please review your child’s personalized calendar with them to avoid students from using the JSO’s phone which is intended for business purposes.
The HCPA is organizing a one-time collection of monetary donations for holiday and year-end gifts. This collective effort, made on behalf of all HC families, replaces the need for individual family gifts to our dedicated faculty and staff. In addition, a portion of the donations will support staff appreciation events in the Junior and Upper Schools at the end of May.
To help make these initiatives possible, we invite families to contribute $75+ per child. However, a donation of any amount is warmly appreciated.
Please send your contribution by 8December 2025, via e-transfer to hcpatreasurer@gmail.com Please include your daughter’s name and grade/cohort in the message field.
Thank you for your generosity and for joining us in showing appreciation for our outstanding faculty and staff.

Prayers – Police Constable Tony Santeramo will be speaking to our community about the importance of evacuation drills and what to do during a lockdown
When we returned to school on Tuesday, after the Mid-term Break, we came together as a community to honour Remembrance Day. This was a time for us to say thank you, to those who have and continue to serve in the army, the navy, and the airforce, as well as countless other ways that people have served on the front lines and behind the scenes for our country and our world. The sacrifices that so many have made, and the courage they have shown, have allowed us to come to school each day, to learn and to play together, and to think about how we too might make a positive difference in the world.
We also had the privilege to hear from a current mother in the Junior School, who is also an alum, who graciously shared the story of her grandparents, one from Canada and the other from France, who in addition to displaying such courage and sacrifice during the second world war, showed us the incredible power of love and hope.
It is always so wonderful to have parents come in share their stories, and help make concepts that can feel distant or difficult, easier to understand and more connected.
Sincerely,
Kate

The Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) – Helpful Information for Parents
As we start our Winter Athletic Season, we thought it might be helpful to share some of the following information with you:
Top 5 CISAA Elementary Athletics Guidelines
Fair & Appropriate Play (FAP): The core philosophy is participation and development, not intense competition. Teams are balanced, and all players receive appropriate playing time.
Sport as Education: Athletics are an educational tool used to teach core values like Integrity, Respect, and Teamwork essential for character development.
No Formal Championships: For younger age groups (U10/U12), the focus is on learning and experience. There are usually multi-game events instead of high-stakes playoffs or formal championships.
Positive Spectator Conduct: Parents are expected to model respectful behavior at all times, providing positive encouragement and showing respect for all officials, coaches, and players.
Trained Coaches & Safety: All coaches must be certified (via the National Coaching Certification Program) and complete mandatory training in areas like concussion safety and ethical decision-making (Safe Sport).

Ella Minnow Book Fair – Monday, November 17 – Thursday, November 20
The Junior School Library is excited to once again be hosting an Ella Minnow Book Fair!
Ella Minnow specializes in books to delight children from birth to teen, and they will be bringing an excellent array of high quality children’s literature to choose from, and just in time for the holidays!
When is the book fair?
The Book Fair will run from Monday, November 17 – Thursday, November 20.
Why do we host a book fair when we can just buy books online and at Indigo?
Having a book fair is an opportunity for students to practice taking responsibility for their choices; managing money, and managing expectations.
Our library also directly benefits from a Book Fair, as 20% of all sales goes toward new books for the library.
How can I support my child?
Students will have the opportunity to browse and create wish lists on Monday November 17th and Tuesday November 18th. The wish list is a tool for your daughter’s decision-making process, so please have a conversation with her about her choices.
Please send the wishlist back to school with her – this is her permission form to shop. Students will have time to shop with her class on Thursday or Friday.
How do I pay for my child’s purchases?
Ella Minnow accepts Visa, Master Card, debit, cash, and are able to charge purchases to student accounts with permission granted (via the Wish List). Cash and student account is encouraged for student shopping.
Please Note:
We ask that parents do not purchase books from their daughter’s wish lists until after she has had a chance to do so herself, with her class.
If your daughter’s wish list is very long, or if you would like to make purchases for the holidays or as a surprise, the book fair will be open for parent shopping from 8am-9am, and 3pm-5pm, Wednesday and Thursday. Ella Minnow is quick to order and supply books that are sold out at the fair and will bring copies of any books that sell out to the school.
**NEW THIS YEAR – Teacher Wishlists!
This is an exciting program that helps teachers build their in-class libraries AND contributes to our book fair revenue. Like students, teachers create a Wish List of books they’re interested in for their classrooms. These lists will be available to view at the fair, and teachers will share their lists via their class portals.
If you wish to take part in this program, come by the fair during parent shopping hours, or simply call me at 416-483-3843, extension 7544, or email your request at erodd@havergal.on.ca. All classroom purchases will include a bookplate commemorating your donation.

Reflections: Self-Confidence in a Changing World
Last week, the Havergal Old Girls’ Association (HOGA) brought together Old Girls/Alum, parents, and educators for an authentic conversation about how confidence, body image, and belonging evolve in today’s world.
Moderated by Christina Sorbara, with panellists Nicole Tapscott ’02, Dr. Nina Mafrici ’02, Dr. Michele Foster, and Krista Koekkoek, the discussion explored how social and cultural shifts —including social media, perfectionism, and post-pandemic pressures —are shaping how girls feel about and in their bodies. From a psychological perspective, fostering confidence today means helping youth stay connected to their inner experiences, challenge unrealistic standards, and feel seen and supported in all aspects of who they are.
Five key takeaways emerged:
Model body trust and self-compassion: Confidence begins with adults who respect and care for their own bodies and emotions.
Focus on function, not form: Emphasize what bodies do (e.g., move, create, express), rather than how they look.
Normalize emotions and body signals: Encourage awareness of hunger, rest, joy, and discomfort as gateways to self-understanding.
Create safe, inclusive spaces: Confidence flourishes where diversity is visible and belonging is felt.
Encourage agency and critical thinking: Help girls question cultural pressures, make authentic choices, and set healthy boundaries.
The evening served as an important reminder that when schools, families, and communities work together to nurture body trust, self-compassion, and a sense of belonging, we lay the foundation for resilience and authentic confidence to thrive. The positive response from parents and educators highlights a shared commitment to continuing this dialogue and to ensuring our girls grow up grounded, confident, and connected.

There was a buzz in the air at the Junior School this week, as we welcomed over 150 prospective families at our Open House. Our Grade 6s played a pivotal role, acting as tour guides. It was impressive to see their confidence, ability to thoughtfully engage with our visitors, and the joy and pride they feel for Havergal. A huge note of thanks as well to our parent-ambassadors, who volunteered their time to speak about the parent-experience at Havergal. It was greatly appreciated.
Thank you as well for your participation in our first set of Parent-Teacher Conferences over the last two days! These important conversations provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, to see the areas in which she is thriving, and to discuss targeted plans for continued growth. Moreover, they allow us to further strengthen the relationship between home and school.
We sincerely value your engagement, and want to reiterate that should you ever have questions or concerns, we invite you to connect us. Be assured that we will do the same.
Sincerely,
Kate

Earlier this week we had the opportunity to celebrate the Festival of Diwali in Prayers. Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning “row of lights,” and marks the triumph of light over darkness, and of good over evil. It is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists, and other religions based in India. Even though the meaning of the celebration may be different, the enthusiasm, and joy it brings to people’s lives is what binds everyone together.
Then, today, to end the week we had the pleasure of hosting a fun-run for Cross-Country runners from Grade 1 – 3 from a variety of schools across the GTA. It was a fantastic way to end the season for these students who have been training throughout the term. A huge thank you to the coaches for encouraging and training our athletes since September.
As we head into the weekend, it feels only appropriate to end with Let’s Go Blue Jays!
Sincerely,
Kate
Today’s edition of “The Weekly” contains information on the following:
We are looking forward to the upcoming Parent-Teacher conferences. These conferences provide an opportunity for teachers to share with you your daughter’s progress, celebrate successes, and next steps for continued support. At this early stage, the focus is on observable learning skills and initial understanding of course content rather than on evaluations or marks. You might find the following guiding questions helpful in framing the conversation:
“What areas and concepts does my daughter understand well? What areas does she find challenging?”
“What learning skills are my daughter showing that contribute positively to her learning? What are some learning skills that might be causing barriers to her learning?”
“What can I do to support my daughter’s learning at home?”
Instructions for registering can be found below in the Reminders section.
Updated Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
A note of thanks for everyone’s flexibility and cooperation with our updated arrival and dismissal procedures. We have especially appreciated people following the directions of our security team as they guide cars into the correct lanes.
A friendly reminder to not stop directly in front of the side loop entrance, and this will impede traffic flow exiting from this area. Thank you.
Open House – Wednesday, October 22
The Junior School Admission Open House will be hosted next Wednesday, October 22nd between 9-12pm. We are looking forward to welcoming prospective families to campus to experience our program in action. Tours will be run by our Grade 6 students, giving them an opportunity to showcase their school pride and to share their HC experience with families considering Havergal for their daughters. As this is a special event, we are asking all students to come to school on Wednesday Oct 22 in their #1 dress. Thank you in advance to all of our Junior School Parent Ambassadors who will be joining us to help support Open House!
Dressing Appropriately For Outdoor Play
With the fluctuations in temperatures over the last several weeks, please ensure that your child comes to school with the appropriate clothing so that they can enjoy their time outdoors.
A reminder that students are permitted to wear Havergal “Spirit Wear,” such as HC plaid lounge pants or sweatpants under their tunic or skirt. These can be a great option, as an extra layer of warmth on colder days! They are NOT, however, permitted to wear these items in class, or during the regular school day.
