A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, November 28

Dear Junior School Families,

Welcome to December! This season is full of joy, but let’s be honest—it is also incredibly full. Between holiday events, darker days, and endless to-do lists, it is natural for both students and parents to feel their batteries running low. While we want to make magic happen, remember that we cannot pour from an empty cup.

To help navigate the bustle, here are a few quick strategies to consider:

  • Protect the Routine: Even amidst the excitement, consistent bedtimes help regulate everyone’s energy.
  • Embrace “Good Enough”: Give yourself permission to do less. A simple night in is often better than a frantic outing.
  • Schedule the “Nothing”: Deliberately block out time on your calendar for rest. Treat it as an appointment you cannot miss.
  • Connection over Perfection: Ten minutes of reading together can reset a child’s nervous system better than any gift.

Wishing you all a peaceful and joyful slide into the winter break!

Warmly

Kate

Health Centre Reminder – Viral Illness Season

As we move further into the viral illness season, we are seeing an increase in common respiratory and gastrointestinal viruses. We kindly ask families to monitor their children for any signs of illness and to keep students home if they are unwell.

Symptoms that warrant staying home include:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Cough and congestion
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • General fatigue or feeling unwell

Keeping students home when they are sick helps protect classmates, staff, and our broader school community. Students may return to school once they are feeling better and able to fully participate in the school day.

New Circles Holiday Angel Program (Nov 17 – Dec 2)

This November, Havergal College is pleased to once again be collaborating with our long-time community partners, New Circles, in support of their Holiday Angels Program. Our Grade 5 students, as part of their Leadership Programming, have been working with their teachers to run this important initiative in the Junior School.

What is the Holiday Angels Program?

  • The Holiday Angel Program matches generous donors with client families, many of whom face significant challenges and are newcomers to Canada, to help meet urgent needs and make holiday wishes come true.

Which Families From New Circles Will Havergal Be Supporting?

  • The Junior School will be sponsoring five families this year. This week, each grade was “introduced” to their family. This included learning a little bit about each member of the family, what brought them to Canada, and what some of their most immediate needs are. These Family Profiles and grade assignments can be found below.

How Can You Help?

  • Each family has made requests for specific gift cards. This allows them to purchase the items that they most need from specific stores, that they can easily access.
  • Please note:
    • Only gift cards can be accepted as donations. Cash donations cannot be accepted.
    • To ensure that a gift card is valid, we ask that the activation receipt be attached to each gift card. Please also write the dollar amount purchased on each gift card.

What is the Recommended Donation Amount for Gift Cards?

  • Ultimately, as a family, please decide on the donation amount that works best for you.
  • To ensure that a gift card is valid, we ask that the activation receipt be attached to each gift card. New Circles and the Holiday Angel families are thankful for all donations that they receive!

When and How are Donations Being Accepted?

  • Donations can be made anytime between now, and December 2nd.
  • Students should bring their donations, in an envelope with their name on it, and give them to their homeroom teacher.

Am I able to get a Tax Receipt for the Donation?

  • Yes! Tax receipts can only be issued by New Circles for donations above $25. Should you require a tax receipt:
    • Print out and complete the Donor Tax Receipt Form 2025.pdf
    • Be sure to add your HAP # (This is the family you are donating to. It is located on the family information page on the top right.)
  • Attach the gift card, activation receipt and tax form together in an envelope and send them into school to your child’s homeroom teacher (s).
  • Please note:
    • Tax Receipts can only be issued by New Circles for donations above $25 that have all the necessary components attached.

On behalf of the Junior School and our Partners at New Circles thank you for your generosity! Every donation will go a long way in making the holiday season a little brighter this year.

For reasons of privacy, Information regarding the family that each Grade is supporting, will be sent to you separately via email.

Support the Havergal Fund

Starting in 2026, families will be invited to support the Havergal Fund during registration and re-registration, making it simpler than ever to participate. Every gift plays a vital role in enriching programs, supporting faculty excellence, and creating opportunities for our students to grow, thrive, and reach their potential. When families make Havergal one of their top philanthropic priorities, our girls feel the impact of that support in their everyday experience.

Kilts must be hemmed to an appropriate length (9 cm above the knee) and socks must be pulled up. Shoes must be tied. Non-uniform items may not be worn in the school during school hours. HCPA Staff Appreciation Donations

The HCPA is organizing a one-time collection of monetary donations for holiday and year-end gifts. This collective effort, made on behalf of all HC families, replaces the need for individual family gifts to our dedicated faculty and staff. To help make these initiatives possible, we invite families to contribute $75+ per child. However, a donation of any amount is warmly appreciated.

Please send your contribution by 8 December 2025, via e-transfer to hcpatreasurer@gmail.com Please include your daughter’s name and grade/cohort in the message field.

A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, November 14, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

When we returned to school on Tuesday, after the Mid-term Break, we came together as a community to honour Remembrance Day. This was a time for us to say thank you, to those who have and continue to serve in the army, the navy, and the airforce, as well as countless other ways that people have served on the front lines and behind the scenes for our country and our world. The sacrifices that so many have made, and the courage they have shown, have allowed us to come to school each day, to learn and to play together, and to think about how we too might make a positive difference in the world.

We also had the privilege to hear from a current mother in the Junior School, who is also an alum, who graciously shared the story of her grandparents, one from Canada and the other from France, who in addition to displaying such courage and sacrifice during the second world war, showed us the incredible power of love and hope.

It is always so wonderful to have parents come in share their stories, and help make concepts that can feel distant or difficult, easier to understand and more connected.

Sincerely,

Kate

As we start our Winter Athletic Season, we thought it might be helpful to share some of the following information with you:

Ella Minnow Book Fair – Monday, November 17 – Thursday, November 20

The Junior School Library is excited to once again be hosting an Ella Minnow Book Fair!

Ella Minnow specializes in books to delight children from birth to teen, and they will be bringing an excellent array of high quality children’s literature to choose from, and just in time for the holidays!

When is the book fair?

  • The Book Fair will run from Monday, November 17 –  Thursday, November 20.

Why do we host a book fair when we can just buy books online and at Indigo?

  • Having a book fair is an opportunity for students to practice taking responsibility for their choices; managing money, and managing expectations.
  • Our library also directly benefits from a Book Fair, as 20% of all sales goes toward new books for the library.

How can I support my child?

  • Students will have the opportunity to browse and create wish lists on Monday November 17th and Tuesday November 18th. The wish list is a tool for your daughter’s decision-making process, so please have a conversation with her about her choices.
  • Please send the wishlist back to school with her – this is her permission form to shop. Students will have time to shop with her class on Thursday or Friday.

How do I pay for my child’s purchases?

  • Ella Minnow  accepts Visa, Master Card, debit, cash, and are able to charge purchases to student accounts with permission granted (via the Wish List). Cash and student account is encouraged for student shopping.

Please Note:

  • We ask that parents do not purchase books from their daughter’s wish lists until after she has had a chance to do so herself, with her class.
  • If your daughter’s wish list is very long, or if you would like to make purchases for the holidays or as a surprise, the book fair will be open for parent shopping from 8am-9am, and 3pm-5pm, Wednesday and Thursday. Ella Minnow is quick to order and supply books that are sold out at the fair and will bring copies of any books that sell out to the school.

**NEW THIS YEAR – Teacher Wishlists!

  • This is an exciting program that helps teachers build their in-class libraries AND contributes to our book fair revenue. Like students, teachers create a Wish List of books they’re interested in for their classrooms. These lists will be available to view at the fair, and teachers will share their lists via their class portals.
  • If you wish to take part in this program, come by the fair during parent shopping hours, or simply call me at 416-483-3843, extension 7544, or email your request at erodd@havergal.on.ca. All classroom purchases will include a bookplate commemorating your donation.

Questions?

  • Please contact our Librarian,Ms. Rodd at erodd@havergal.on.ca or by phone at 416-483-3843, extension 7544.

HCPA Staff Appreciation Donations

The HCPA is organizing a one-time collection of monetary donations for holiday and year-end gifts. This collective effort, made on behalf of all HC families, replaces the need for individual family gifts to our dedicated faculty and staff. In addition, a portion of the donations will support staff appreciation events in the Junior and Upper Schools at the end of May.

Thank you for your generosity and for joining us in showing appreciation for our outstanding faculty and staff.

Please carve out some time this weekend to read The Weekly – Junior School, as there is lots of information that will help you stay informed as we head into the winter season.

Sincerely,

Kate

Reflections: Self-Confidence in a Changing World

Last week, the Havergal Old Girls’ Association (HOGA) brought together Old Girls/Alum, parents, and educators for an authentic conversation about how confidence, body image, and belonging evolve in today’s world.

Moderated by Christina Sorbara, with panellists Nicole Tapscott ’02, Dr. Nina Mafrici ’02, Dr. Michele Foster, and Krista Koekkoek, the discussion explored how social and cultural shifts —including social media, perfectionism, and post-pandemic pressures —are shaping how girls feel about and in their bodies. From a psychological perspective, fostering confidence today means helping youth stay connected to their inner experiences, challenge unrealistic standards, and feel seen and supported in all aspects of who they are.

Five key takeaways emerged:

  1. Model body trust and self-compassion: Confidence begins with adults who respect and care for their own bodies and emotions.
  2. Focus on function, not form: Emphasize what bodies do (e.g., move, create, express), rather than how they look.
  3. Normalize emotions and body signals: Encourage awareness of hunger, rest, joy, and discomfort as gateways to self-understanding.
  4. Create safe, inclusive spaces: Confidence flourishes where diversity is visible and belonging is felt.
  5. Encourage agency and critical thinking: Help girls question cultural pressures, make authentic choices, and set healthy boundaries.

The evening served as an important reminder that when schools, families, and communities work together to nurture body trust, self-compassion, and a sense of belonging, we lay the foundation for resilience and authentic confidence to thrive. The positive response from parents and educators highlights a shared commitment to continuing this dialogue and to ensuring our girls grow up grounded, confident, and connected.

Please refer to the image below for a helpful visual reminder of when to stay home and when to return.

Thank you for your support in keeping our school community healthy!
