A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, October 31, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

It was so much fun to have all of our students, faculty and staff dress up for Halloween today! We know how much everyone looks forward to this special day, and were thrilled to be able to participate in a variety of activities to celebrate together. A special note of thanks to the students in Grade 12 who came to support our students with our annual door decorating contest! The competition was close once again. Congratulations to our students in 3B and 5B who were the lucky winners, along with 3A and 6B, who were the runner ups. Finally, a shout out to our Boarding Students and the Boarding Team for hosting our Junior and Senior Kindergarten students for trick or treating in their home! We love any opportunity that allows us to build relationships between students across the bridge.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Halloween, and enjoy Game 6 tonight! GO JAYS GO!

Sincerely,

Kate

Once registration closes, we will then enter the names of all students into a pool, and pull names randomly. We will then update families accordingly.

A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, October 24, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

There was a buzz in the air at the Junior School this week, as we welcomed over 150 prospective families at our Open House. Our Grade 6s played a pivotal role, acting as tour guides. It was impressive to see their confidence, ability to thoughtfully engage with our visitors, and the joy and pride they feel for Havergal. A huge note of thanks as well to our parent-ambassadors, who volunteered their time to speak about the parent-experience at Havergal. It was greatly appreciated.

Thank you as well for your participation in our first set of Parent-Teacher Conferences over the last two days! These important conversations provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, to see the areas in which she is thriving, and to discuss targeted plans for continued growth. Moreover, they allow us to further strengthen the relationship between home and school.

We sincerely value your engagement, and want to reiterate that should you ever have questions or concerns, we invite you to connect us. Be assured that we will do the same.

Sincerely,

Kate

A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, October 17, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

Earlier this week we had the opportunity to celebrate the Festival of Diwali in Prayers. Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning “row of lights,” and marks the triumph of light over darkness, and of good over evil. It is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists, and other religions based in India. Even though the meaning of the celebration may be different, the enthusiasm, and joy it brings to people’s lives is what binds everyone together.

Then, today, to end the week we had the pleasure of hosting a fun-run for Cross-Country runners from Grade 1 – 3 from a  variety of schools across the GTA. It was a fantastic  way to end the season for these students who have been training throughout the term. A huge thank you to the coaches for encouraging and training our athletes since September.

As we head into the weekend, it feels only appropriate to end with Let’s Go Blue Jays!

Sincerely,

Kate

Purpose of Parent-Teacher Conferences

We are looking forward to the upcoming Parent-Teacher conferences. These conferences provide an opportunity for teachers to share with you your daughter’s progress, celebrate successes, and next steps for continued support. At this early stage, the focus is on observable learning skills and initial understanding of course content rather than on evaluations or marks. You might find the following guiding questions helpful in framing the conversation:

  • “What areas and concepts does my daughter understand well? What areas does she find challenging?”
  • “What learning skills are my daughter showing that contribute positively to her learning? What are some learning skills that might be causing barriers to her learning?”
  • “What can I do to support my daughter’s learning at home?”

Instructions for registering can be found below in the Reminders section.

Updated Arrival and Dismissal Procedures

A note of thanks for everyone’s flexibility and cooperation with our updated arrival and dismissal procedures. We have especially appreciated people following the directions of our security team as they guide cars into the correct lanes.

A friendly reminder to not stop directly in front of the side loop entrance, and this will impede traffic flow exiting from this area. Thank you.

Open House – Wednesday, October 22

The Junior School Admission Open House will be hosted next Wednesday, October 22nd between 9-12pm. We are looking forward to welcoming prospective families to campus to experience our program in action. Tours will be run by our Grade 6 students, giving them an opportunity to showcase their school pride and to share their HC experience with families considering Havergal for their daughters. As this is a special event, we are asking all students to come to school on Wednesday Oct 22 in their #1 dress. Thank you in advance to all of our Junior School Parent Ambassadors who will be joining us to help support Open House!

Dressing Appropriately For Outdoor Play

With the fluctuations in temperatures over the last several weeks, please ensure that your child comes to school with the appropriate clothing so that they can enjoy their time outdoors.

A reminder that students are permitted to wear Havergal “Spirit Wear,” such as HC plaid lounge pants or sweatpants under their tunic or skirt. These can be a great option, as an extra layer of warmth on colder days!  They are NOT, however, permitted to wear these items in class, or during the regular school day.

As we head into the Thanksgiving weekend, I want to send a heartfelt thank you for the incredible partnership, engagement, and support you’ve shown since the start of the year.

New Changes to the JS Arrival and Dismissal Protocols

At Havergal, we are always looking for ways to make our processes safer and more efficient. To this end, starting on Tuesday, October 14th, we will be implementing an updated Junior School Junior School Arrival and Dismissal Protocol

Members of our security team will be on hand to direct traffic, and Junior School Faculty and Staff will continue to ensure that your children are welcomed and dismissed safely.

Kindly review the Junior School Traffic Flow Map

Please Note the Following:

Kindergarten Families

  • Kindergarten students are now included in the Junior School’s arrival and dismissal process. Kindergarten parents now have the choice to either walk their child to the front of the Junior School or drop off in the main driveway for both arrival and dismissal.
  • There is no longer a designated drop-off or pick-up area specifically for Kindergarten.
  • Kindergarten students came home with a “carline number” today, which will be used for pick-up upon arrival. Here is the Carline – Quick Reference Guide 2025 for your reference
  • All kindergarten students will be escorted out to their parents/guardians by their teachers.

Drop-Off for Students in Grades 1 – 6

  • Remains the same

Pick-Up Zone Changes

There is now one additional pick-up zone. This is referred to as the “Side Loop,” which is located at the back parking lot (Kindly refer to the traffic flow map above). Our security team will be directing you when you enter the JS driveway. Families can, always, walk to pick up their child(ren) at the front of the Junior School.

Dismissal Times

  • Dismissal times remain the same
    • JK – Grade 3: 3:05 – 3:15 pm
    • Grade 4 – 6: 3:15 – 3:30pm
  • If you have more than one child, please arrive during the time slot assigned to your eldest child.

Parking

  • During afternoon pick-up, both parking lots are actively used for student dismissal. Vehicles may not be left unattended in the lanes, at any time.
  • It is not advised to park in the back parking lot, where the side loop is, between 3:00 pm and 3:30 pm, as you will not be able to leave the parking lot at this time.

A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, October 3, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

And just like that…in the blink of an eye…we are already in October!

It was so lovely to have so many families and students out last week in support of our community partnerships, on Celebration Day! For those who were able to stay for Friday Night Lights, I am sure you can agree that it was an EPIC event. To see so many people cheering on young women athletes was truly inspirational! Havergal’s win was just the icing on the cake!

We are very much looking forward to next week, and our annual Harvest Festival. A friendly reminder to have your daughter bring in her donations for the North York Harvest Food Bank, one of our longstanding community partners!

Enjoy the weekend!

Sincerely,

Kate

Havergal’s Guidelines on Public Statements

At Havergal College, our role is to teach students how to think, not what to think. Following consultation with our Senior Leadership Team and a special task force of the Board of Governors, we have established guidelines on issuing public statements. The Board of Governors endorsed these guidelines earlier this week. In line with these, Havergal will not release public statements on geopolitical or sociopolitical events. As a day and boarding school with a diverse, international community, our responsibility is to help students develop the skills necessary to engage in respectful dialogue and critical thinking. You can find the guidelines on public statements and an accompanying FAQ in the Policies, Procedures & Agreements section of our parent portal

We know that both local and world events over the past few years have been difficult for many in our community, and we remind students and families that we have support available through our student support team, along with access to external supports for students as necessary

Reflections: Self-Confidence in a Changing World – An Invitation for Parents (Tues, Oct 28; 6 pm – 8 pm)
