A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, May 30, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

It is so lovely to see how engaged our students continue to be, as we approach the end of the school year! This week our Grade 5 students shared some of their learning around the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s “Calls to Action.” This started by sharing the commitments they had made with their peers, and an invitation to participate in activities at recess to learn just some of the ways that they too can support truth and reconciliation, right here at the Junior School.

Students in Kindergarten and Grade 12 also had the opportunity to attend the Teddy Bear & Friends Picnic, where students shared a popsicle and their favourite stuffie with one another. This beautiful tradition illustrates how we connect our youngest learners with our graduating class, fostering a sense of belonging. If you haven’t already, please do check out the absolute cuteness on our Instagram page!

Finally, this morning we bid a fond farewell to our JS Prefects, Ailie and Becca. They have modelled exemplary leadership in the Junior School, modelling what it means to live by our school values. We will miss them tremendously next year, and wish them both the very best as they begin this next exciting chapter of their journey.

Warmly,

Kate

  • Parking is extremely limited on campus. As such, we encourage any spectators to either walk, take public transit, an Uber or Taxi.
  • For people wanting to drive, you are invited to look at Spot Angels, to find nearby parking options.

Student Health Updates for the 25-26 School Year

It is that time of year when the Health Centre requires you to renew and update health information for your child if they are returning to Havergal in the fall.

Health information is collected for all students to support their safety, health, and wellbeing during their time at Havergal for any related activities.

You will receive an email prompting you to log in to Magnus (Havergal’s Medical Information System) on June 1st. You must log in even if no health information has changed.

As a reminder, per Havergal College’s Conditions of Enrolment, your child’s immunization record must be up to date and submitted to Toronto Public Health Immunization Connect Ontario website.

A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, May 23, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

Our JS students did not let the rainy weather dampen their spirits today! It was such a joy to see them perform the cheers they have been working on all year, under the guidance of our Grade 6 House Leaders. Each house showed incredible spirit, enthusiasm and teamwork as they cheered in front of the judges. We are excited to hear which House came in first, second and third place. We are also eager to find out which House Banner earned the most House Points. All will be revealed next week!

A huge thank you, not only to our Grade 6s for working so hard all year, but to our Junior School Prefects and the Junior School Council who have all taken an active role in making House such a fun and engaging community experience this year.

Warmly,

Kate

A Message From The Head of the Junior School – FOR THE DAY- Thursday, May 15, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

My name is Alicia, but today, you can call me Ms. Alicia because I am the Head of Junior School (for the day!) Normally I am in Grade 3, but today, I am giving Ms. White the day off so she can relax. Today, I got to do many things that Ms. White usually has to do. Some of the things that I did were greet students in the morning, visit the Green and Gold shop, read with the kindergarten students, go to a Senior Leadership Meeting, have lunch with Dr. Samson, go to South House, take a ride in the golf shop, make an announcement about a special dessert next week, and say goodbye to the students at the end of the day! I’m exhausted, and hope that Ms. White got to take it easy today!

Warmly,

Ms. Alicia – Head of Junior School (for the day)

Transition From Bring Your Own Device to School-Issued Apple Laptops

Parents with daughters in Grade 4 received an email informing them that we will be making a transition from a “Bring Your Own Device” model, to students being provided with a school-issued Apple Laptop, starting in Grade 5.

Here is a high level of what you need to know:

After careful consideration and evaluation of the BYOD program, we have decided to transition to a school-issued device model for our students in Grades 5 and 6. Please note that this is being done at no additional cost to our families, and that students will not be required or permitted to use their own personal computers at school. BYOD will remain in place for students in Grades 7 – 12.

What This Means for Your Child:

  • 2025-26
    • JK to Grade 2: No changes to current technology use
    • Grade 3-4: Continuing with current school-issued devices
      • iPad in Grade 3 and Apple Laptop in Grade 4
    • Grade 5 – Will receive school-issued laptops; personal devices no longer required or permitted
    • Grade 6 Will continue with BYOD for one more year
  • 2026-27
    • Grade 6 – Will receive school-issued laptops; personal devices no longer required or permitted

Benefits of This Change

  • Creates a standardized learning experience across the Junior School
  • Provides more efficient IT support
  • Establishes a more controlled digital environment for younger students
  • Comes at no additional cost to families

More specific details will be shared in our July summer message. If you have any questions, please contact me to arrange a time to connect.

A Conversation with Jake Ernst

Join us for an inspiring midday conversation with Jake Ernst from Straight Up Health on nurturing resilience, connection, and empathy in the digital age. Thursday, May 22, 2025 from 12-1PM (virtual). RSVP here. Please contact Courtney McNeillie with any questions!

A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, May 9, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

It has been a colourful and joyous time in the Junior School, as we celebrated Pride Week and enjoyed an incredible performance by our Grade 6s, under the direction of Dr. Kofi Gbolonyo, one of our artists in residence.

Pride Week has provided an opportunity for us to reflect the idea that “Everyone Deserves to Love, to be Loved, and to Live Authentically as Themselves.” It was wonderful to see our students, faculty and staff across both sides of the bridge engage in learning about the LGBTQ2S+ community, and think deeply about what it means to belong, and the actions we can take as allies.

We were also just blown away by our Grade 6 students as they performed the Boboobo Dance from Ghana at Prayers this morning! It was truly inspiring to see how all of their hard work and practice paid off. Here is the FULL VIDEO of their performance.

Additional photos and videos of Pride Week events, and this morning’s performance can also be found on Havergal’s social media sites. I highly encourage you to take a look!

Warmly,

Kate

Bring Your Sunscreen!

As the weather warms up, please ensure your child comes to school with sunscreen already applied and, if possible, brings their own for reapplication. Students are often outside beyond PE—at lunch, during breaks, and for class activities—and we’ve noticed many do not have sunscreen with them. Thank you for helping us keep everyone sun-safe.

Pride Week Schedule: Monday, May 5 – Friday, May 9

Pride – Everyone Deserves to Love, to be Loved, and to Live Authentically as Themselves

Last week we shared that Havergal will once again be celebrating Pride Week this year.

In preparation for the week ahead, we wanted to share the schedule of events we have planned for students in the Junior School.

Monday – Introduction to Pride Week

  • 8:25 am – 8:55 am (JK – 6)
    • We will kick off Pride Week by watching a video created by HC students and teachers. The video highlights what Pride Week is, why it’s important, and what allyship looks like.
  • 9:55 am – 10:15 am (Gr. 1 – 6 – Optional)
    • Students will have the opportunity to use chalk to draw messages of support and kindness at the front and back of the Junior School

Tuesday – Author Visits (8:25 am – 8:55 am) – Author Visits

  • We are thrilled to be welcoming Forest of Reading authors to the Junior School to talk about their books. Parents are warmly invited to attend. Please note that this will be in place of Prayers.

Wednesday (9:55 am – 10:15 am) – Bracelet making in the library (Optional)

  • Grade 1-6 students will have the opportunity to participate in bracelet-making in the library—a meaningful, hands-on activity that allows them to express support, celebrate diversity, and demonstrate allyship in a creative and personal way.

Thursday (9:55 am – 10:15 am) – Karaoke Dance Party in the MPR (Optional)

  • We hope Grade 1-6  students will join us in the MPR to share their favorite dance moves and sing their hearts out! This fun and inclusive event is a joyful way to celebrate self-expression, confidence, and community.

Friday – Dress Down Day

  • The Junior School community is invited to dress down in a way that reflects the theme Just Be YOU!—whether that means wearing a favourite outfit, a team uniform, cozy sweats, or anything else that feels authentically you.
  • 9:55 am – 10:15 am (Gr 4 – Gr. 6 Optional)
    • A Kahoot game will run in the MPR. Gr. 4-6 students are invited to participate in Pride related Trivia.
  • 2:30 pm – 3:00 pm (Gr 1 – Gr. 6)
    • Pride Week Assembly (Grades 1–6): How to Be an Ally; followed by a Gr.4 – Gr. 6 Pride Parade to the lower pitch.

North York Harvest Food Bank Drive – Monday, May 5 – Friday, May 9 (Drop-off Donations in Front of the JS Library)

We are once again excited to be partnering with the North York Harvest Food Bank (NYHFB)! This year we have further strengthened our partnership with the NYHFB by working with Community and Corporate Fundraising Manager, Judith Reda. Ms. Reda has been working directly with us so that we can better learn about the organization, the impact of our actions and the importance of community support. Students have had the opportunity not only to donate, but to go and volunteer, sort food, meet clients who use the service, and see first hand the impact of our partnership.

The NYHFB is currently greatly in need of the following items:

  • Canned Fish
  • Canned Fruit
  • Cooking Oil
  • Period Products (e.g., tampons, pads, liners, menstrual cups…)
    • At Prayers on Tuesday, some of our Grade 5s taught us about “Period Poverty,” and shared that while access to period products is a basic human right, not everyone has the resources they need to manage their periods safely and with dignity. Not having access to menstrual products keeps many girls away from school and women away from work during their period.

Thank you in advance for your support with this final community drive of the 2025–2026 school year. Your involvement helps make a meaningful difference.

Parents as Speakers – An Invitation to Share Your Knowledge and Skills with HC Students

We’re excited to invite you to volunteer for a new initiative, “Parents As Speakers”, at Havergal College. This initiative aims to build stronger connections at HC by creating meaningful opportunities for parents to share their stories, talents, and experiences in ways that can directly enrich our students’ lives.

  • Whether it’s by volunteering to offer career insights, speak at Prayers, engage in informal student discussions, or participate in creative formats like our Human Library, your involvement can make a real impact.
  • If you’re interested in volunteering, we invite you to express your interest by completing the Google Form HERE. There’s no commitment at this stage—we’ll follow up with more information about each opportunity as it becomes available.

An Update to the JS Schedule for 2025 – 2026
