A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, April 25, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

Spring is definitely in the air, and it was the perfect opportunity to celebrate Earth Week! Students have been engaged in a variety of activities throughout the week that allowed them to reflect on the importance of our planet, and ways that we can actively work to protect it. Here are just some of what the students participated in.

  • Nature walks along the Lisa Hardie Trail
  • Garbage pick-ups around our campus and local community
  • Educational workshops, including sessions on waste awareness, endangered animals, and climate action
  • Daily Earth Week challenges for the Junior School to help make a difference!

A HUGE thank you to our Grade 4s and their teachers for taking on the leadership of this week! It was appreciated by all involved.

Earlier in the week, we also had the opportunity to travel down to St. Paul’s Bloor Street, to celebrate Founders’ Day. A highlight was hearing from old girl, radiologist, and medical consultant for television and film, Dr. Mary Grant ( ‘01.) Dr. Grant spoke to us about how her time at Havergal not only gave her the academic skills she needed, but also taught her the importance of acting from a place of empathy and understanding, to be willing to change paths when faced with new opportunities, and to genuinely celebrate when others succeed. It was an inspiring message, and another example of a Havergal student who is making a difference.

Warmly,

Kate

Pride Week – Monday, May 5 – Friday, May 9

Havergal is excited to once again be celebrating Pride Week from Monday May 5 – Friday, May 9.

As a school, Havergal is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment where every student feels safe, seen, and valued throughout the entire year. Our inclusive practices are woven into our curriculum, school events, and classroom discussions to ensure that all children and families – regardless of background, identity of ability – are celebrated and respected. During Pride Week, we take time to specifically recognize and honour the experiences and contributions of LGBTQ2S+ individuals. This is an important opportunity to help our students practice kindness, empathy, and build a strong sense of community. By highlighting these important issues, we aim to foster an environment where all students can thrive, feel proud of who they are, and know that they belong.

We look forward to sharing the activities that have been planned, at a variety of age levels, and resources for families wishing to carry on the discussion at home with you next week.

Havergal Babysitting List – NEW!

The Havergal Babysitting List is a resource to provide Senior School students with a way to indicate their interest in babysitting for Junior School families. It is also a resource for Junior School families to identify Senior School students who are looking for babysitting jobs.

Havergal is supporting this initiative by providing a list of Senior School students who are interested in babysitting on the Junior School parent portal. The list will be updated at the start of each academic year.

The list can be accessed through the Parent Portal Junior School Landing Page under “Registrations.”

A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Thursday, April 17, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

It was another very special week in the Junior School. On Tuesday, close to 60 students helped re-enact the story of Holy Week and Easter. It was such a pleasure to see them perform with such confidence.

Today, we welcomed over 300 Grandpals to the building! On the heels of Student-Led Conferences last week, our students were once again so proud to share their work, introduce their Granpals to their friends and teachers, and tour them around the Junior School. There was a buzz in the air throughout the morning, and the joy was palpable.

Thank you to our Grandpals, who showed such curiosity, were actively engaged, and made this morning such a success. We are excited to welcome everyone back next year.

For all those celebrating, we wish you a happy and healthy Easter.

Enjoy the long weekend.

Warmly,

Kate

A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, April 11

Dear Junior School Families,

WOW! The students know that whenever I say “my face hurts,” it’s because I am filled with pride and joy, and can’t stop smiling. Today, this pride and joy stemmed from seeing our incredible students share and reflect on their learning with you at our first ever Student-Led Conferences. We hope that it offered a glimpse into the depth and breadth of learning that our students are involved in each and every day. A HUGE thank you to all of our homeroom, specialist, and learning support teachers, our academic coordinators, and the Gator Care team. The thoughtful planning and practicing that went into making this day such a success is a tribute not only to their expertise as educators, but to the dedication and deep care they have for all of our students. I hope that your faces are all hurting a little today too!

For all those celebrating Passover this weekend, we wish you a chag sameach!

Warmly,

Kate

Student-Led Conferences – Feedback

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our Student-Led Conferences today. As we look ahead to next year, we are eager to hear your feedback! Kindly take a moment to fill out the following short Student-Led Conference Feedback Form.

Empowering Excellence Progress Update: Year One

A year ago, launched our Empowering Excellence Strategic Plan. As strategy expert Kathleen Eisenhardt puts it, “Strategy answers two basic questions: Where do you want to go, and how do you want to get there?” For us at Havergal, the answer is clear: to solidify Havergal’s position as a world leader in girls’ education by ensuring the long-term wellbeing and success of young women, empowering them to be change agents of the future and to make a positive, lasting difference in the world.

Focusing on three key pillars — Connection, Wellbeing & Belonging, Future-Ready, and Transforming Tomorrow — we’ve begun our commitment by investing in programs, people and our campus.

We are pleased to share a Year One progress update, with key highlights and milestones we have achieved together. These initiatives underscore our commitment and build upon Havergal’s 130-year legacy of delivering excellence in girls’ education. We look forward to continuing our journey to prepare girls for success in every possible version of the future.

Alternatively, you are welcome to go to the JS Dining Hall, where there will be tea, coffee and water available.

A Message From The Head of the Junior School – Friday, April 4, 2025

Dear Junior School Families,

We started this week with an incredible Arts’ Week Prayers in the Junior School. It was truly a delight to see so many students showcase their visual art work, and to listen to them sing and play for us. Hearing them speak about the role that the arts play in their lives was inspirational, and a beautiful way to start our week together.

Today, we also had the opportunity to learn more about the importance of the month of Ramadan and Eid, from students in both the Junior and Upper Schools. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is observed by approximately two billion muslims worldwide. It is a time where many fast from sunup to sundown, reflect and pray. Eid, is a festival that marks the end of Ramadan and the breaking of fast, at the end of the month. Thank you to all that participated in this special prayers.

Warmly,

Kate

Upcoming Student-Led Conferences: Everything You Need to Know

We are thrilled to be hosting Havergal’s first Student-Led Conferences in the Junior School this year! This new initiative offers a wonderful opportunity for our students to take center stage in sharing their learning journey with you.

What Are Student-Led Conferences?
Student-Led Conferences showcase what students are currently learning in the classroom, and provide them with the opportunity to present their progress to you formally. Rather than showing you a final product, students will focus on the learning process and self-reflection

What is the Goal of Student-Led Conferences?

Student-Led Conferences are meant to empower students to take ownership of their learning, while also fostering a meaningful dialogue between students and parents. This is part of our ongoing commitment to incorporate student voice and reflection into our parent-teacher conferences and formal reporting, a key initiative in our strategic plan.  Rather than the traditional teacher-run parent-teacher conferences, this approach shifts the focus to the students themselves, allowing each child to actively engage in reflection, goal-setting, and metacognition.

We are confident that these conferences will allow for rich, reflective conversations that highlight not only what your child has accomplished, but also the ways in which they are thinking about and growing in their learning. We look forward to celebrating our students’ achievements and growth with you next week.

Please Note:

  • There will be NO school or Gator Care held on this day.
  • Students should dress in their regular Havergal uniform when coming into the Junior School for their conference.
  • If you have more than one daughter and are attending multiple student conferences, please note that the library will be available for students who are waiting to take their parents to a conference or who have already finished their student-led conference. This will be a supervised space.
  • If you are unsure of when you have signed up, please reach out to your child’s homeroom teacher.

Call Out for Participation – Pride Week

Havergal will once again be celebrating Pride Week from Monday, May 5 to Friday, May 9. Pride week is a  time when we come together as a school to learn more about the history and significance of Pride and the many contributions of members of the LGBTQ2S+ community.

Should you or your daughter wish to be involved in the planning for this week, please contact Liz Watt (lwatt@havergal.on.ca

What’s New in Gator Care?

Should your daughter attend Gator Care on a regular basis, we encourage you to read the Gator Care Monthly Blast This will provide you with a high-level overview of what is happening, and some quick reminders.
