A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, November 24, 2023

Dear Junior School Families,

It has been a wonderful week at Havergal, as we invited our students to “get curious” about their wellbeing, and what it means to thrive. We started the week, led by students in Grade 2, discussing how our physical and mental health contribute to our overall wellbeing. Students were then challenged to think of the many ways that different emotions can have a direct impact on not only on their wellbeing, but the wellbeing of others as well. By paying attention to how we are feeling, understanding where these feelings might be coming from, sharing this information, and then taking action, acts to build our self-awareness, and better understand how others might be feeling as well. Then, today, students in Grade 6, highlighted the importance of developing our physical literacy skills to build healthy habits, not just during Thrive Week, but every day.

We are extremely grateful to our “Thrive Committee” who organized a fulsome week of programming for our staff and students! Be sure to ask your daughter what she has learned about her own wellbeing, and some of the skills she is developing. We invite you to visit Havergal’s Social Media pages this weekend to see just some of the amazing activities that took place this week.

Warmly,

Kate White

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Friday, November 17, 2023

Dear Junior School Families,

Thank you so much for participating in our first set of JS Parent-Teacher Conferences for the year!

These important conversations provide an opportunity to discuss your child’s progress, to see the areas in which she is thriving, and to discuss targeted plans for continued growth. Moreover, they allow us to further strengthen the relationship between home and school.  It is important to remember, however, that while the conferences provide an overview of your child’s academic and social-emotional development, ongoing feedback throughout the year is paramount. Should you ever have questions or concerns, we invite you to contact us and be assured that we will do the same.

As a final note, we had the opportunity to celebrate the conclusion of Fall Athletics in the Junior School at Prayers, on Tuesday! It was  fantastic to see how many of our students are participating from Grades 1 – 6! Please be sure to check out the Fall Athletics Celebration Video to see more!

Warmly,

Kate White

Thrive Week (Nov 20 – Nov 24)

Thrive Week at Havergal College is a week-long series of events, from JK to Grade 12, that support building a culture of wellbeing. The goals of the week are to support our students to gain a better understanding of the variety of elements that contribute to wellbeing; help understand and normalize the wide range of emotions that can be experienced; discover practical tools and strategies to manage your own wellbeing.

Each day will feature activities for students to participate in to accomplish these goals. A sample of some of these  in the Junior School includes: mindful meditation activities, breathing exercises,read-alouds, therapy dog visits, yoga, drama, a nature walk, and “sound baths.”

We have also been sure to arrange a series of experiences for our faculty and staff, so that they too can take a moment to focus on their own well being.

A Message From the Head of the Junior School – Thursday, November 9, 2023

Dear Junior School Families,

It was an honour to welcome Havergal Parent, Lt. Cl. Daley to the Junior School on Wednesday, to speak with us about his many experiences serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, and to share what Remembrance day means to him. Please be sure to ask your daughter about what they learned, and why it is that we honour our veterans and those who continue to serve our country, both at home and abroad.

I wish you all a wonderful long weekend, and hope it brings about an opportunity to spend time together with family and friends.

Warmly,

Kate White

A Message From the Head of the Junior School

Dear Junior School Families,

It was so much fun to have all of our students, faculty and staff dress up for Halloween on Tuesday! We know how much they look forward to this special day, and were thrilled to be able to participate in a variety of activities to celebrate together.

Today, we had the opportunity to learn more about the Festival of Diwali, from some of our  students who celebrate this in their families. Diwali is the festival of lights that originated in India. It is one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddists, and other religions based in India. Even though the meaning of the celebration may be different, the enthusiasm, and joy it brings to people’s lives is what binds everyone together. While the story varies from place to place, people together learn to rejoice in the inner light of their lives. Be sure to check our Havergal’s social media pages to see photos!

A reminder that we will have our Mid-Term November Break next week. Students will have school on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. They will return to school on Tuesday, November 14. We hope our students have a wonderful holiday!

Warmly,

Kate White

New Junior School Playscape!

We are excited to announce that the Junior School will be getting a new outdoor playscape later this fall! Thanks to the generosity and commitment of our donor community, this new play structure will not only support play, discovery and learning but also provide an inclusive space for children of all abilities and serve as a gathering place to build friendships.

Faculty, academic leaders and our Facilities department have collaborated with designers to create a structure that facilitates open-ended, creative play and complements our natural landscape. Some key features include:

  • Wood and engineered wood fibre composed of sustainable materials;
  • Slides, bridges, ramps, a tunnel, rings and flat spaces; and
  • 2,400 square feet in size.

The playscape will be situated at the edge of Lower Pitch, adjacent to the Lisa Hardie Trail and neighbouring woodlands. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-November and will take approximately six weeks to complete. All construction zones will be fully fenced, enclosed and signed appropriately for safety purposes and our Facilities Director will be monitoring the project.

Please note that there will be no impact on Junior School athletics, co-curriculars or academics during construction of the playscape. Lower Pitch will remain open for use and both recess and lunch will proceed as usual outdoors.

We look forward to having an exciting new outdoor space for our students to enjoy!
