Message from the Head of Junior School: April 26, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

I found myself feeling exceptionally proud to be part of the Havergal community again this week.  Yesterday, students from Grade 1 – 12 celebrated Founders’ Day at St. Paul’s Cathedral.  We had a visit from “Ellen Knox” herself, who read an address she made to graduates almost 125 ago, heard reflections from both a Grade 12 student, and an “Old Girl” from 1964 who shared what being a Havergal Girl means to them, listened to the inspiring words of Principal Helen-Kay Davy about the importance of aspiring to be our best selves,  and were dismissed by a Havergal Old Girl, and her daughter who is currently a student.  Another highlight for all was the spectacular performance of our Junior School choir, who sang beautifully about promise and possibility. Wishing you all a lovely weekend.  We look forward to what will be another fantastic community event next Friday, as we celebrate Havergal, Past, Present, and Future.

Sincerely,

Kate White

Message from the Head of Junior School: April 12th, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

Today marked a special day in the Junior School as our Kindergarten and Grade 12 students joined together for the “Kindergarten-Grad Tea-Party in the Brenda Robson Hall.”  This lovely event brings our youngest and oldest learners together. at the bookend of their time at Havergal. On another note, we were once again blown away in prayers this morning by our talented Grade 6 students. With a beautiful vocal performance, and a powerful presentation on “Women Worth Knowing,” it was the perfect way to end the week!  Be sure to check out Havergal’s social media pages for coverage of both.

Primary and Junior Parent Math Academy Session

Kudos to the primary and junior parents who participated in a half-day mathematics learning session, Tuesday April 9 about “Number Structures.”  Together, we learned about the significance of number structure within and across the grades.  While we solved math problems and discussed solutions, we also developed an understanding of the purpose and impact of the mathematics that the girls are learning at the Junior School. As one of the parents reminded us, “At the Junior School, the girls are learning Mathematics, not doing arithmetic.”  Stay tuned for next year’s series of Primary and Junior Parent Math Academy sessions.

Message from the Head of Junior School: April 5th, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

This morning in prayers, we spoke about the power of forgiveness.  Like all of the other traits we have spoken about this year, such as respect, kindness, joy, honesty, gratitude and compassion, it is often much easier said than done! I encourage you to speak with your daughter this weekend about what forgiveness is NOT (forgetting, expected to happen right away, keeping score) and what forgiveness IS (a choice, understanding that nobody is perfect, good for our physical and mental health).  We then ended the message with a guided meditation to help us practice how to more easily “forgive and forget.”

Sincerely,

Kate White

Our grade 4 students did a great job and played melody, harmony and bass lines.

In the afternoon, WHCI students performed a variety of pieces for our Junior School students in Grades 1 – 6. Some of the pieces they performed were Imagine by John Lennon, One Love by Bob Marley and Hot! Hot! Hot! with special guest player, Havergal Music Teacher, Ms. Rachel Read.
