Message from the Head of Junior School: March 1, 2019

Dear JS Parents,

On Tuesday, Havergal students celebrated Pink Shirt Day as a way to raise awareness about bullying.  We held two separate assemblies, one for students in JK – Grade 3, and one for students in Grades 4 – 6.  We spoke to the girls about how their words and actions can have a lasting impact on those around them, as well as what the difference is between being rude, being mean, and bullying.  We defined these as follows:

  • RUDE: When someone says or does something UNINTENTIONALLY hurtful and they do it once.
  • MEAN: When someone says or does something INTENTIONALLY and they do it once.
  • BULLYING: When someone says or does something INTENTIONALLY hurtful and they KEEP doing it – even when you tell them to stop or show them that you’re upset.

Finally, we also reminded the girls that they are not expected to handle these things all on their own, and to reach out to a parent or other trusted adult when they need help. Please continue to engage your daughter in conversation on this very important issue.

Pizza Day

Ash Wednesday – March 6

Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday.  Interested Junior School girls and faculty are welcome to join Rev. Douglas in Ms. White’s office at 10:40 am for a brief service with imposition of ashes.

Spring Book Fair with Ella Minnow – March 4 – 8

Students are invited to browse the book fair with their class early next week. Purchases can be made on Thursday and Friday.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place on Thursday, March 28 (4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.) and Friday, March 29 (8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.)  Please note that there is NO SCHOOL for Junior School students on Friday, March 29th, but that classes continue for students in the Upper School.

  • Junior School Sign-Up: Wednesday, March 6 at 6:00 p.m.
  • Upper School Sign-Up: Thursday, March 7 at 6:00 p.m.

Spring Clubs – Registration

  • Teams run from the week of April 1st to May 22nd.  
  • Squad & squad teams run from the week of  April 8th to the week of May 27th.
  • Please note that Multi-sport and Volleyball Squad will continue to run until March Break.

Junior School Bake Sale – Bakers and Volunteers Needed!

When it’s chilly outside, there is nothing more lovely than the smell of cookies and cupcakes baking in the kitchen!  This is our not so subtle segue into the upcoming Havergal Bake Sale on March 28. Right now, we need 2 things from the HC parent community: Baked Goods – lots of Bake Goods – and Volunteers!

Hold the Date- April 9th for Parent Math Class

Primary Math Class:  Come and learn how to do Primary Math on April 9 from 9 am – 11:30 am.  Registration details are coming.
Junior Math Class:  Come and learn how to do Junior Math on April 9 from 1pm-3:30 pm.  Registration details are coming!
